Well I finally put the lift system in the pole barn to get the Big Game out of the gravel and dirt. Overkill abounds with the hardware, but it's only money right? This system provides a 3:1 mechanical advantage and is easy to adjust. There are still a few slight changes to make it work better, but it works fine as is.

Here is the anchor system. Carabiners attached to the beam. The line weight held by a prussik and backed up with a loop knot.

A close-up of the prussik.

The line then goes up the wall to a double pulley to change the pull direction.

A close-up of the pulley.

The lines then run to a double pulley for each line.

Here's a close-up of a double.

The lines then run down to a moveable single pulley, back up to the double and, finally, tied to the carabiner attached with the single to the kayak. This gives a nice 3:1 mechanical advantage.

This is how it looks with the kayak up about 7 feet off the dirt and gravel floor.

Not very difficult to do and many details could be done differently. I've over-engineered this system as a prototype for another hoist for the truck canopy next.

Very nice Jay.  I knew you'd figure out a way to use some climbing gear and self-rescue technique to solve your kayak storage problem.

Nice job Jay.

Now, if you could just help me with a design to lift that heavy SOB up on top of my Truck Rack when I'm at the dock!

Best I've come up with so far, is find two more hands.

Once I got all the supplies together, it only took about 30 minutes to rig. The concept is the same as rigging a Z-system for crevasse rescue.

Here's another option for those not familiar with "rigging a Z-system for crevasse rescue (Took me a minute to realize you weren't talking about the bodybuilders).

I see there is a 55# limit, but I'm guessing it's negotiable.  I had the set-up for a bike, but thought it would work for the yak.

Yep, same type of setup. The mechanical advantage comes from the moveable pulley.

Sorry to run this topic off the rails. Speaking of purple and gold doggies. You guys ever see a crazy purple and gold bus driving around or at the games?
If so, that's my bro's rig...

Great Kayak Hoist by the way...

Nice hoist! I have two of those bike ones mentioned above, they are fairly low quality but work for light bikes.

My yaks(all three) are held up in my garage by these: http://www.hoister.com/selection.php . They are pretty much like what you have built but a little smaller. I have both of my SOT's on four point systems with 4:1 mechanical advantage. My lighter Old Town Loon 138T sit-in is on a two point system with 3:1 advantage. They whole 4-point kit runs about $100 online. I have nothing but good to say about them. They even have a lock so that if you drop the rope the kayak won't fall.
