I make a lot of my salmon gear so snelling hooks is a big part of finishing everything off. Unfortunately snelling hooks require some serious dexterity. I like to think I'm pretty good at knots but this one was always a hassle. Until now! I found a great new technique (to me at least) to tie them.

Nice!  I've seen those snelled hooks, and was wondering how to tie them, and what that knot was called.  =)

That speech pattern of the guy on the video kind of reminds me of Bubba from Forrest Gump, just replace "shrimp" with "fishing line" and the various cooking methods with various knots in the following quote.

Good find Z.

well that guy with the "bubba speech pattern" would be me

The little $1 tide guides used to have a center page with snelling instructions, thery were very clear and easy to follow---been using that technique since Hector was a pup....That little book also had the "rules of the road", boating guide with bupy info, right of way, etc etc.

My apologies to AverageFisherman, I should know better.  It was very insensitive and ignorant of me to make those comments.  I'm pretty sure everyone could understand you just fine.

BTW, I took a look at your other videos on Youtube and you have a lot of great tips there.

No worries AF. Bsteves is all good, we just like to talk smack. And yeah, you can make fun of our yaks. To each his own and to each a good snap!

And thanks for the snell tip. I've been having a hard time getting that neatly done and your technique makes it nice and easy. By the way... ever tried to fish from a yak? ;) Good fun!

I'm from South Carolina originally, but I lost my accent years ago (from time spent living in Maryland and Washington, DC).  Whenever I go home though, or talk to my family on the phone, it apparently comes back.

My wife enjoys this to no end, and is very creative in finding ways to use "Bubba" in the course of normal conversation.

Speaking of accents, I grew up thinking I didn't have an accent what so ever.  Turns out I do...  The Northern Cities Vowel Shift.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Cities_Shift

It's actual a pretty messed up accent.  Several linguistic researchers believe it is the most dramatic alternation of the English language in 500 years.  Anyway, we shift our vowel sounds around so that a word with an "a" in it sounds like a "o" and a word with an "o" might sound like "au", etc..

For example, I always thought that the words "pal" and "pail" were pronounced the same, with "pal" pronounced the way "pail" actually is pronounced.

At one point NPR had an online test where you could find out which accent you had.

I was wondering where the asshat first started and was told this weekend when at Pac City.  I guess I missed this thread.

This is not the way I learned how to snell a hook.  Here is link to the snell knot I tie ... http://www.animatedknots.com/snell/index.php

It is harder to tie, but that's the way I see most (all?) commercially available products tied.

BTW, I think AveFishDude could have done a better job with the instructions.  For instance, that knot was tied loose.  Best to tighten it up and make sure none of the loops cross.  In my experience, crossed/loose knots can cut themselves.
