Portland Area Kayak Fishing Safety Clinic
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:47:41 am »
[UPDATE:  THIS EVENT HAS A NEW PLACE AND DATE ]
AUG 24th HENRY HAGG LAKE
[Noon]

I think we have enough critical mass here in Portland now that a get together / workshop might be in order.  Anyone interested?  Anyone have a good idea for a time and place? Ideally this would happen on a weekend at a calm safe body of water where swimming is allowed.

Safety wise we could practice assisted rescues, self rescues, what do do with a flooded kayak.
We could also work on general paddling skills (strokes, braces, launching from shore, launching from a dock, etc..)

If all goes well, we can talk about doing an advanced ocean workshop, a river workshop, etc..

I'm not exactly a PDX local, but I'd love to help put on something like that. Weekends are always best for me, too.

No worries Brian, we could certianly use your expertise.

I didn't mean for this to be a Portland only thing.  It's just it helps to have a critical mass and besides, you're still pretty close to Portland.

Combining this with a thread the other day about trying to do a weekend Mt. Hood-area camp out, how about an Aug 30-31st Ollalie Lakes trip, with a couple hours of safety practice mixed in?  Any interest?

I'll be in George Washington at the Gorge Amphitheater (08/29-08/31), otherwise I would be there for sure.  Olallie lake is always fun, and really wanting to practice my wet entries with all my fishing gear attached.  If I do end up going up to Olallie this weekend I'll be sure and do a fishing report for ya guys.

I'll personally be in Fresno, CA that weekend.  Some others might be going to the Moutcha Bay gig up in Vancouver Island, BC.  If that's the best weekend for everyone else, go ahead.  Otherwise any other weekends available?

Just split this off from the "new guy to the forum" post.  We hijacked his post long enough.

I'm the world's worst for organizing events like this... I'm booked every weekend in September, and my only other free August weekend is the 16 and 17th.  That work better for folks?

If not, maybe folks who are free in Sept. could plan something?

Sounds like a good idea to me.  My weekends are pretty hit or miss these days but I'll try to make it if I can.

How about sooner rather than later? How about August 1,2 or 8,9?
At Hagg? A pool would be nicer, but the lake should be warm enough (?)
(and you should be dressed for immersion anyway!!!! >:(  ;D)  I have a couple of spare boats I could bring and one that sinks readily ::)

(and please don't take this as me trying to organize this ;D )

Wali, I'm gone both of those weekends, but please go ahead without me.  I think I already know this stuff (although practice is good), but as long as there is someone there with some experience like yourself it should be good.

I'd be good for the 8th or 9th.  I practiced getting back on the boat when I first bought my yak a few years ago but it was on a trip in Baja, slightly different water temps up here so I'd like to do it again.
