10/17 Hagg Lake Report

I got out on the water about 11am today, and started trolling West from Boat ramp A. 



About 20-30 mins into my paddle/troll, I ran across an elderly couple from Portland that were out paddling in two wooden kayaks.  Nice folks! 

Shortly after meeting them, I landed a 9" trout on a worm trolled behind a 20" leader, and a 1/4oz tear drop at about 1.5 mph (GPS).

I paddled back and forth over a patch of fish, but couldn't get another bite, so I headed towards the South side of the lake near Boat ramp C.   Again chased a bunch of fish that I saw on the FF.   Most were sitting at 13-18 ft down.   

Lake was glass!





Paddled/Trolled another two hours and thought that this poor trout I am towing around should be let free as it looks like he was going to be the only fish for the day.  (I had barely hooked him in the lip, so damage very minimal, no bleeding and he shot away like a bullet). 

Well, another hour passes and I start nailing trout left and right between Boat ramp C and the Dam, all about 50-100 ft from shore, in 20-40 ft of water.   I picked up three nice 10" and one 12" trout.   Lost another right at the boat.  And had a hammer hit once and nearly took my pole out of the rear holder.  Lost that one before I had a chance to get the pole in my hands.   

Then it went dead again, so I paddled over to the dam to see what lurks over there.   HOLY %$^!!!!  I should have started there!   I trolled into the Southern most pocket along the dam wall.   I started noting HUGE fish on the FF compared to the ones I was chasing around the lake earlier.   I set my self up rear facing the dam and worm just off the bottom.   I hooked 3 bass, one 13" LMB of which I landed, said Hi, and promptly let him go.    Then landed a feisty 6" Pumpkin Seed.   He was a fun little fighter.   

It was started in to get late, so I shot back to Boat ramp A, clipping along at 3.5mph from the dam. 
I passed a blue tupperware kayak still on the bank getting ready to hit the water.   

Here is my T13 as it was setup for todays fishing.  All my poles were down under at the time of the photo.


A friend at work hooked me up with a Coke~A~Cola one liter bottle crate.  It is a little less than half the height of a milk crate, narrower one way, and wider the other way than the milk crate as well.   It fits PERFECTLY in the well and holds my cooler in nice and tight. 



Ohhhhh,.... and the 4 keepers that went home for dinner.


Can't wait to get back out there again.

Very nice report INSAYN.  I'm glad to see you get into some fish with your new Trident.  Now you just need to work on taking a few action shots and self portraits.. you know, bent rods, fish on the end of a line, you holding your fish kind of shots.  They're not the easiest shots to take, but you'll figure it out eventually.

I won't be trying that until I get a waterproof camera.  This is the only camera we own right now, and it would probably crap out if started to rain.    All my shots today were completely idle, or standing on solid ground.   I had the camera stowed in a waterproof box in the Rod Pod tray during all my fishing, so it was not quick to get at. 

Hey, a waterproof camera would make a great derby prize.

  That makes total sense.  I guess I've gotten a little cavalier with my old 2 MP camera that I take fishing.  I really need a waterproof camera myself.

I was just thinking the same as I look for a new waterproof camera for myself.   There is something to say about prizes that are desirable items that people might not already have (VHF radio, water proof camera, dry suit, etc).  However, kayak manufacturers tend to have the most to gain by sponsoring an event so I'm guessing grand prizes will remain kayaks for big events.

Nothing wrong with that. 

A guy that wins a kayak can always sell or trade within the group for what he needs.

Wow, that looked like a great day on the lake! Good fishing, good catching, good weather. What else could you ask for?  Nothing better than that "karma" of turning loose the first fish and those stockers make really good eats!

Speaking of camera's. I just got the wife an Oly 850 SW for her birthday.

Did you go ahead and get your initials engraved on the camera for her to think of you every time she uses it? 

It looks like camera's are coming down in price as technology advances.   I'm sure a waterproof camera is in the future.

Great report and nice job fishing. A nice open lake, cruizin around, and coming back to the ramp w/ a nice stringer of fish... the madness at it's best!

Just finished putting together my report on the Sanyo Xacti 2 waterproof video, with pix.  Will post in a few minutes...very happy with it, web size pix comparable to my Nikon D200, altho 8mp vs the Nikon's 10mp.  Nikon much better for big prints, but for yakkin the Sanyo is da bomb!!
