December PDX Dino Fishing Fest Dec 7th, 2008

So I'm thinking about where to have Sunday's Sturgeon Fest.  My initial inclination was to go to Cathedral Park, but that place can be packed with strugeon fishing boats on a weekend.  After last weeks trip to George Roger's Park I'm wondering if that wouldn't suit our needs better. 

-We'd have the old boat ramp to ourselves.
-The fishing seemed decent.
-Less boats on the water means less issues with finding a spot to anchor up, esp. when a lot of you will be doing this for the first time.
-The park itself seemed like a good place for a lunch gathering.


Anyway, let us know if you plan on coming, speak up if you have any objections with doing this at George Roger's Park and if you have any better ideas on a location, we'd like to hear those too.

As for time, I figure we'd start showing up around sunrise (7:30 am) and fish till lunch.  Have lunch on land and stretch and then those wishing to continue could go back out and try some more.


P.S.  For those that care for this sort of thing, this weekend is also the Portland Holiday Ale Festival.

I'm going to try to make this event.  George Rogers sounds like a good venue (for all the reasons listed).  What time are the tides for this area?

I'm not sure if there is much of a tide differential between Lake Oswego and Portland proper. If there is it's a few minutes at most.

Here's a tide chart for Portland on Sunday.   Lunch might have to be early or wait a couple hours.

I wish I could make it. We are headed to the coast to look for some early steelhead action!  Plus the Dino tag is full!  Have to wait till 09 to put anymore in the smoker.

Maybe.  I've heard of people using a single length of chain in muddy bottom.

I've seen this used effectively on pontoon boats and rafts.  I don't see why it wouldn't work on a yak.

Yessss.  Home field and the legendary Z.  Two good reasons.  Although the monsters that lurk beneath the deep waters off George Rogers park are reason enough for me.

The park is at the intersection of Highway 43 (aka State Street) and McVey Avenue in Lake Oswego.  Look for the boy scout Christmas tree stand.  If you are coming south on 43, you cannot turn left into the park, so turn right on McVey and turn around to head straight into the park.  Keep driving down past the ballfields to the last parking lot.  The old boat ramp is to the left as you face the river.  Its way easier than using the stairs/wheelchair ramp on the right.

I'll see you all on Sunday morning and point you to the spots where I've had success and where I've seen other boats have success.  If you go Saturday, start fishing the water between the small creek just south of the beach - straight across.  It gets deeper as you approach the opposite side.  I've had luck in shallow and deep water there.  If no luck, work upriver.  There is a very deep hole across from the concrete structure.

Here's a Google Map of George Roger's Park.  You should be able to click on the icon and get directions.   If you switch to "satellite" view you should see the parking lot and down by the water the boat ramp.
