Does anyone have any good suggestions for beach put ins around the newport area?  We live in the corvallis area, and normally head to newport or yahats if were looking for a lazy weekend.  Rock fish are the goal, or if anyone is heading that way, and dosent mind haveing a newb peak over their shoulders, I wouldent meeting up in the area for a paddle on the salt.

This area is just south of Yahats.  Looks like it could be a doable launch.
Not sure what kinda fishing is out there, but the launch looks to be dang close to the parking lot.  I guess it's called Bob Creek Wayside.

I'd be willing to give that spot a shot on the right day. As I remember, the beach is fairly steep & the surf can often pound pretty hard there. Her's om other options
Devils Elbow State Park: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=44.13563,-124.12281&z=15&t=h&hl=en
Yaquina Head: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=44.673534,-124.07311&z=17&t=h&hl=en (hafta carry yaks up & down stairs)

Yeah, I scouted that spot once and would really like to give it a shot. Make sure you bring a set of wheels! There's a bit of a walk from the parking down to the cove. They rope off the sand when seals are up on the rocks. It's a day use, fee park. Talking to one of the park workers at the front gate, if someone thinks that what you're doing is "disturbing" the behavior of the seals, the park staff "may" give you a hard time ::), but she didn't give me the impression that it was that big of a deal. Friggin seals.... Other than that, it looks like a cake walk of a launch. Most days that are worth going out you probably won't see much surf if any, you might have to paddle over a spiller. There has to be great structure all along that cape. That isn't a MPA is it? That would for sure be a bummer.

There is an alternative route to the water at Devil's Punch Bowl/Otter Rock, and it doesn't involve stairs. It leads to the cove around the point, to the north, to the cove that is actually Devil's Punch Bowl, if I'm to believe Acme Mapper/USGS. To the NW of the signed parking lot there is another parking lot. If you follow the road between the lots, to the N, you will see a paved trail (on the left) that leads down to the water. There's a bit of a drop at the end, where it dumps on to the beach. The day we were there it was nasty with 20+ winds and about 10' swells. I'm not sure what it would look like on calmer days, but there are some rocks offshore that might give some protection from the surf.

The drop to the beach.

The last bit of the trail.

Looking to the SW, South side of the Cove.

On a flat day this would be a piece of cake compared to the stairs on the other side! ;D

There are quite a few places you can launch from locally.  On the ocean one of my favorites is 68th St just north of Newport (Just south of the OSP station).

They are just finishing up Spenser Creek Bridge and there's a new walkway from Beverly Beach State Park with plenty of close by parking.

There's a number of places to toss your yak in on the bayfront including the Hatfield parking lot and it's not to difficult to launch under the bridge on the south side.

I guess it all depends on what your interests are.

ROCKFISHING.... thats the intrest fishsniffer. I think I,ll try launching from beverly beach sometime in the next week or two.  Took the Cobra down a portion of Muddy creek Today, Had a blast except for all the log jams.  I hadent been on this part of the creek before, must have portaged 20 times in 5 hours (and that is not an exageration).  Pretty beat by the time I got back.

I personally like Magicseaweed.com, it seems to be pretty accurate. I check a handful of places though. The NOAA site of course is a must, iwindsurf.com for the wind forecast, surf-forecast.com is also a good one for the swell outlook. Wavewatch.com is handy mainly for reading the direction of the dominant pattern you might be looking at which comes in handy depending on what direction the beach faces and direction the beach may receive protection from. I find that looking at a few places and getting an average read out of all of them is pretty effective.

BLM staff tried to tell me I couldn't launch there. Question authority, that's my motto, so I discussed it with the BLM supervisor for the area, ODFW, USFW, & State Police. Not an MPA. The authorities can't legally do anything to stop a member of the public from fishing or launching a human powered craft from this public recreation area. Some of the big rocks are part of the National Bird Sanctuary. Supposed to stay 500 ft away from the big rocks when the birds are nesting & can't bother the seals. It is definitely on my list this summer. Let me know when you want to go.
