Hey, I want in! I've been scoping the south side out for years now, I catch some perch from there now and again and I've always daydreamed about paddling off the beach there. Anybody ever fish there? I'm guessing the bike means that you can't access the beach from the Boy Scout camp? I've always just gone down the trail from the top, do you know how far it is from Sand lake to the Cape via the beach?

Ahhh...Cape Lookout.  The protected south side of great blue must be conquered!  All we need are Boy Scout uniforms, and a Den Leader.  This allows access to the great earth mother and her bounty below, add the Boy Scout lodging and all it's amenities!  I doubt there is a lounge adorned with a brass pole, but hey...that's roughing it! Once you start a Den, you can't be denied access!  I still remember the secret handshake.

Unfortunately if Boy Scout records are accurate, they may have my abrupt departure in 1977 on record.  I joined with great aspirations of high adventure and discovery.  I then discovered our first "outing" was a "field trip" to the local McDonald's.  I quit without taking advantage of the field trip, I did not feel bad for leaving and only made rank of Wolf patch.  I felt like the kid in A Christmas Carol when the secret decoder pen only revealed the add "drink more Ovaltine".

Cape Lookout-
We could easily get past the front line scout forces using the element of suprise, then fight through the inner defenses without much resistance, we could hold the stronghold...at least until Scouts of America reinforcements arrive by carpool.  I'm not sure we would be well received though, and probably never get invited back...
-Any ideas?

I think that's about as far as I made it too!   ::)

I have yak fished there twice.  The funny thing is the fishing there isn't any better than several much more easily accessible areas. In fact both times I had to work harder for my limit then normal.  It is well protected from the north wind and swells, when other spots are rockin it often looks like a lake.  The difficult access makes it hardly worth the effort IMO.  The Scouts can't be moved concerning not allowing access through their property.  I have talked to everyone from the guy that mows the lawn to the head honcho in PDX.

Cool. I made it as far as boy scouts, but I quit after a hiking trip when the scoutmaster wanted me to work on merit badges instead of going fishing, like I had planned. He had intercepted me sneaking out of camp with my gear. I actually told him. "I'm not interested in any more merit badges. I just want to go fishing!"  Then I turned and hiked down to the stream. >:D

Oh yeah, a surf buddy of mine has a heavy duty beach bike with 4" wide tires and disc brakes. He can ride that thing in fairly soft sand!

Hmmm... I wonder if I could get access?  I'm an Eagle Scout and served my troop as an assistant scoutmaster and Venture Crew leader (high school camping junkies still in Boy Scouts) until I left for college.  It seems NW troops are just pansies compared to mine back in Kansas City.  From people I've talked to up here it seems like they only camp/hike/paddle a couple times a year; we went at least once a month if not more.
