Rogue River Report
« on: April 27, 2010, 02:30:24 pm »
Ok, so i guess i'll fess up....

I have been fishing the Rogue for Springers some since last thursday...Here's the painful story:

Ever since Spot posted his two springer day i have been jonesing to catch a springer!

I did a little research(called Rogue outdoor store) and the guy there was real helpful on setting me up to catch a famous Rogue River springer, i think he was excited about someone catching one on a Kayak.

so on Thursday, After getting the necessary gear i headed the 4.4 miles up river to the launch area, get dressed up and launched...In the completely wrong spot. I pedaled and pedaled against the current which was stronger then i realized and got to a suitable place to anchor, dropped the anchor and it wouldn't hold....Three tries later and i was spent tired. I drifted back to the launch area to catch my breath and plan a new strategy.

I walked up river a ways and found a better spot to launch with less current, finally got my anchor set and wet a line for about 2 hours until evening. No bites.

I went back down on Friday thinking to myself "this has got to be the day, got my gear set, anchor spot set, good to go". Six or so hours of fishing on Friday, one bite, not even a take down bite.... Many boats anchored all around the area and i didn't see one anchor release or hoopin and hollering.. bad day.

So, now i'm getting a little..uh, lets say obsessed... I plan for my return on Sunday evening with plans on staying until i catch a fish.

I arrive Sunday evening to a beautiful evening, suit up as fast as possible, check my gear and grab my yak to drag it down the little incline to the water and trip on a rock, pretty much diving head first into the bitter cold water of the rogue, barely holding on to the yak from slipping out into the current and fighting to regain my balance at the same time!!

I beached the yak and ran up over the bank, swearing to myself and hoping nobody saw me... :-[

I regained my composure dried my shades, shook off the water and launche, nothing could spoil the upcoming bendo action..Not one bite after 2 hours  :-\

I get out dry off, build a fire and cook a couple hot dogs, planning to crash early and fish all day Monday, that's when i realized Leo was very sick and i frantically packed up my stuff and hauled butt home to get him to the Vet. Ended up good, i picked him up this morning, hes in good shape.

Pretty crappy trip, but monday would have been a miserable rainy affair anyway. I'm just glad my dogs ok, and i did learn the technique, those springers wont escape me long...
See ya on the water..

Dude!  Way to push the boundaries.  Don't give up.
Luck smiles only on those who cast their lot.

Glad to hear that Leo's OK too!

CBY. A cluster day of fishing is better than work, hospitals, mowing the lawn, etc. That Rogue has alot of heavy current. Can remember about 25 years ago being anchored there and hooking a Springer only to have it taken away by a 1500lb sea lion. Keep living the dream and be safe

Nice report, Roy! I've rafted a portion of the Rogue near Ashland about 10 years ago--beautiful river! I have been so busy on weekends that I haven't been out--you are inspiring !

A short video on the first day. No bendo action, just shows the area and river conditions.

Nice area, wish it was a little closer.

Nice report.  What an awesome river - haven't been down there since '08.  If you don't mind my asking, what do you use for a camera?

Roy,

You certainly get an "E" for effort! I am so glad that Leo has recovered. Did the vet ever figure out what was wrong?

It's one of the original Hero GoPro cameras, not the wide angle one.

No Dave, they didn't know the exact cause. I was thinking he ate some Salmon but the Vet said it causes different type of symptoms. He seems back to normal today, I'm so glad my buddy is ok.

Thanks for the report, Roy. Glad to hear all is ok with Leo.

Keep workin it. There's always a learning curve on new water, and I'm looking forward to the report describing how all of your efforts paid off!
