Is anyone going to this? Has this become the orphan Kayak Fishing Derby?

I'm still planning on going.

I really thought hard about it, even built my trailer with events like that in mind,  but its just to far to be practical for the time I have available.

it's definitely a camper.... try to find some of the older posts regarding it and read up. figure 2-5 days on the west side of VCI in a semi secluded bay..

hoping others fill you in...

In the bay, are the fish all black, or are there some bright ones? I've camped & fished out of Cougar Creek campground a couple of times and a lot of the fish along the wall were already darkening up.

I'd say 10-15% of the fish are like this.

And ~20% of the fish are dusky like this:

This 29 pounder was dusky when I caught it, but you know how they darken up a bit more after dying.

And the rest vary from colored up to moldy.  So you do stand a good chance of walking away with a brace of decent fish on a given day, especially earlier in the season, like when the derby is.  Most of the slight colored up ones (more than just dusky) cut ok, if you're interested in meat hunting.

I'm long past packing "meat" home from distance. Usually kill one for camp dinners, but the rest get C&R'd. Now anything over 50 gets hauled home for the bragging tour  ;D The rest are for sport.

Considering this, Id be driving up from Boise Idaho. Anyone in the area want to carpool. I have a motorhome

You should come. It's a long trip, but to me it's worth it. I can fish a long time around here and not catch much!! ;-)

Now, if we can only have 80 and sunny like last year!
