Yakking for Umpqua chinook??
« on: August 10, 2010, 12:43:01 pm »
I'm going to take my little PB over to Reedsport this week in hopes of tangling with a fall chinook, but will apply all lessons learned on this scouting trip to trying again, perhaps next week, with the Trident. Anyone else fished for these silver footballs in the lower Umpqua?
Advice?

Once I saw the gig, it became apparent why this is not the best spot for yakking ....
No fish love, by the way and no one else had any either between Buoys 26 and 28 on Wednesday's high tide.

My buddy caught a 52 pounder!! before they started dredging. not sure where bouy 26 and 28 are, is that right below the 101 bridge? the big bend? Why do you think it's not a good spot for yak fishing?

Coos: Yes, it is that stretch downstream of the 101 bridge. It seemed like it would be exhausting to try to troll with the tide, then pull up, paddle back down against the tide and troll up again ...

Yep, river trolling is work in a Kayak. Just gotta pic a shorter troll and work it hard. I'm gonna try there soon. Let me know what day is good for you and i'll go with ya.

Roy: Gotta get a yak rack for my new truck before I can even think about it. Or I can bring my boat over and tow a couple of yakkers against the tide for a couple of runs!

I fished it today. It's actually a really nice troll...Launch pedaddle 50 yards,troll.. That's if you hit the tide right that is.

No Salmon love, saw a few boated, don't think it was red hot. But, Big Sturgeon were jumping all over the place, could have sworn i saw a 54 incher jump out give me the "come catch me look"...Next week should be fun!

Roy: Your Mirage is perfect for the situation. Where did you launch from and where did you fish? When I was there last week, we launched on the east, Reedsport, side and just upstream of the 101 bridge and ran down to buoy 26 or just beyond. The incoming tide was really moving, and I can't imagine the effort to paddle a mile or so against it for each troll with the tide. Do you have the legs of an NFL lineman?

I fished the Umpqua 101 area three days last week, now fish, 1 hit (while I was talking to Roy on my cell phone), one day I went aginst the incomming tide going out and then aginst the outgoing tide on the return, my knees were sore the next day but if I can do it, anyone can.  I found the best approach is to launch, go under the 101 and fish with the flotilla until your ready then you only have to shoot the 101 tube once.

Roy, I would be up for it if the wind calms down. Keep me posted!
