frasier river sockeye good news
« on: August 26, 2010, 04:16:39 pm »
I drive to forks wa every thursday for work and can only get canadian stations on the radio in some areas. They had a report on today regarding the sockeye return this year to the fraser river. They said it is absolutely unbelievable. It is the best run since 1913. they said the river is thick with fish and the fisherman(commercial i think) are going nuts but realize the price will be low because of the volume. With all the bad news about fish runs going bad it was nice to hear something different.  the fish biologists are still trying to figure out why this happened because last year was horrible. They think it may be that the fry had good bait when they are most vulnerable. i wondered if this has been a benefit to any of you BC kayak fishermen.

It was featured on "All things Considered" tonite, run is double the previous best.  You're right about the mixed blessing---price paid to the fishers will be low.

Fishing here out of Sooke has been unbelievable for the past 3 weeks on the socks! I took a friend and his daughter out 2 weeks ago in my power boat. We had lines in at 7:30 am and we were done by 9:15 with 12 sockeye. We went whale watching for the rest of the morning!  I have been smoking, canning and vacuum sealing/freezing all month. Back to work on Monday...

This was a crazy year for Sockeye.  My first year able to fish for them since I moved to Chilliwack and it was crazy.  Freezer is stocked full.

Awesome news - thanks for sharing that.   :)
The Outdoors is a place where we can discover ourselves, share with others, appreciate Nature, and grow into better people.  Or...  we can focus on killing, hoard the good spots and hot bites, take Nature for granted and abuse it, and allow our ego's to dominate us.  Some will fall squarely at the extremes of my descriptions, and nearly all of us have experienced aspects of either extreme.  For me, it's about recognizing where I am in regard to that spectrum and making necessary adjustments.
