Getting popular!
« on: September 07, 2010, 07:33:10 am »
Fished PC Monday, fishing was a little slower than the past few days, I had to work a little to find my rockfish and get lings over 26".  Didn't end up getting my last ling as I lost a couple nice ones at the gaff :'( and a real brute that was kicking my butt came unbuttoned about 20ft under the yak.

What did surprise me was the number of yak fishers I saw... Seven if I include myself!  It was nice to meet Kiwanda Jr out there.  Good luck with your "white whale" man!  Didn't get a chance to chat with any of the other yakers.  Guess a couple of them were unaware Cab's were closed and had some explaining to do to the fish checker :o

I did see a distinct lack of Yak "safety" flags.  After attending a couple Dorymen's Association meetings it (flags on yaks), is one of the main things that they were very happy to see on kayaks.  We disappear behind swells without them, with one we are visible for a long ways.

Dang, that's a lot of yakkers! It's exciting that so many people are getting out on the water there, but I would like to see more flags flying.  C'mon ya'll!  They are pretty cheap and you'll be doing yourself a HUGE favor.  There are plenty of places in Oregon that sell ATV accessories or you can just take an unused pole and zip-tie a bright orange flag on it.   :police:

Thanks for the report Pelagic!

Id there a NWKA flag????

think Zee did a run a year ago, but not sure if there is plans for a new one or not....

Zee, if you do make another run of them, can you make them 25% larger than the originals, for a bit more distance?>

At minimum, clip a flag to one of the rods that is just sticking straight up in a rear rod holder.  Cheap and functional.

I like the size of the last batch. If you do it again Zee, I'll buy another one.

Yes, I would like to see another batch of flags made too (I'd like the hoodies first, but that's just me).
I have to disagree with ya WR. I think that if they're any bigger they'd catch too much wind.  Mine already seems to catch a lot of wind as it is.  I think they look great from far off.

I missed out on the last batch, wish I'd had one in the Strait when I was there with Sequim Salty----the swells were big enuf that we got a bit hidden....

hoodies and flags!

yes and yes!

Seems like whatever wind your flag catches, the flex in your shaft would displace that energy before it propelled your yak at all. The more it flaps and moves the more visible you are. I still really like the Firestik flag w/the spring mount I picked up at the ATV store.

7 foot w/base $22

cheap insurance as compared to getting run over by a PB
