Big Island Nov 6

Fished the Big Island of Hawaii yesterday.  Boogie-D came down from Oahu to show me his Ulua Hole.  Decent action hooking up, landing was a different story.  I had 2 totally rock me.  From hookup to backing in no time flat and into the rocks, very exciting!!!  Two more came unbuttoned, but the way they were freight training, they probably would have ended up rocking me too.  I was finally able to land the smaller model in the second pic.

Boogie was showing me how it was done and got 2 himself including the one in the first pic.

Nice papios. Not exactly ulua size, but still give ya awesome fight.  Hana paa! I used to fish for ulua back home from the cliffs with 12' rods and slide bait rigs biggest was 62 lbs. But used to catch the papios in 10 to 15 lb range casting lures. I'm so jealous..I'm hoping to go Hawaii in Feb next year to visit my sister and maybe rent a kayak for a couple days. They are some of the hardest fighting fish in my opinion.

When do papios become ulua.  I thought it was at 10 pounds?

Nice fishes!!! Looks like you had some decent weather, it's been supa crappy over here. I think the papio/ulua size depends on where you are, here on Oahu it seems like ten lbs. is the size, but I've talked to guys from the big island and 20 to 25 is more the range there. Either way, I'd be stoked to hook into either of those fish.

I keep coming back to this post and staring at that beautiful deep blue water, it looks mighty inviting. Gives me major pineapple itch.

Thanks.  The weather was so-so, but it doesn't look it in the pic.  It was overcast, and sometimes raining, all morning.  And we had a south wind going.  Both it and the currents were working against us on the paddle home, and we really had to grunt it out.

FYI, Boogie and the AquaHunters hold an annual Papio Tournament in August on Oahu's North Shore that is kick ass. Might want to save your pennies, ducats, and shekels and jump on the invites when they are extended to the group here. That usually happens at the end of June/beginning of July.

Nice going on the CnR, that's a cool move. They are pretty dang tasty, though! Had some friends visiting last week, took them out and hooked a couple smaller papio off the shore that we made some mean spicy poke with. Pretty good pan fried too

Ulua can have cig, although I'm told that the smaller ones usually don't.  You can test for cig if you want.  Boogie was CNR-ing so I did the same.  I didn't want to burn his spot.
