Check the front page or the AOTY site's rules page.

There appears to be a discrepancy between the points per inch species and the allowed species.

Stripped bass on the allowed and walleye and lake trout on the points per inch listing.

The points per inch listing is correct.  The other is probably a cut/paste from NCKA. I'm surprised no one noticed this before as it was likely that way in 2010.

I'm sure as soon as Brian sees this, he'll fix it.

So I hope this doesn't seem like an attempt to hijack the thread but I had asked last week about the possibility of including Brown Trout in the 2011 AOTY and only got a South park reference for a reply. If no one fishes for Browns then no big deal but I got a couple last year in the 18 to 20 inch range and if I am lucky enough to do so a again would like to count them towards the AOTY

I like catching browns too.  They fight a lot better than rainbows.

Also, the points for Cabezon seem to be a bit high and the points for Lingcod a bit low.  Seems a 42" ling coming in under 170 points is a bit low, especially when you look how many cabbies were over 170 points (with 2 or 3 at 200 or more points).  Did the group just collectively catch a lot of huge cabbies?

The cabezon scores where out of wack and I did mention it to bsteves. Out of 15 entries of cabezon for last years tournament the average score is 173. Thats the same as catching a 25 inch rainbow trout. That doesnt happen very often. Lee was last years closest to that mark with 24 but thats just one person. Brown trout/ rainbow combo would be fun to see as well as pink salmon this year but over all I am satisfied with the 20 fish we currently have. I just wanted to thank bsteves and others for all their hard work putting this thing together. Im sure you guys spend a lot of your free time working on this project. Im signing up as soon as it gets warmer.

I agree with lings being low. I think halibut are low too. There were some monster cabs caught last year! anything over a 22" cabi is huge in my books.

Here are a few of my thoughts about points for AOTY
I think a good quality big fish should be 150 range really big fish should be in the 175 range and a MONSTER should be over 200

My $0.02
7 points for cabs might be a bit more fair 22" = 154
4.5 points for ling seems about right 34" = 153
4 points for halibut 38" = 152
4.5 points for kings 34" = 153
5.5 points for coho 28" = 154

Thoughts any one? I tried to factor in difficulty to catch too.

Believe me, it isn't easy assigning points.  You solve for one point in the curve and you mess up another.  Optimize for max size and you mess up the mean score.  Optimize for mean score, you mess up the max size.

Here's a graph bsteves put together on the stats of the AOTY entries.  We'll use it to adjust to points roughly leveling the white boxes.  There will always be outliers that score big.  That's what separates the men from the boys.  Hopefully we'll get the points tweaks done in the next few days.  Sorry it didn't happen before the competition started.

BTW, taking into account difficulty to catch was never part of the equation when determining PPI.

I can see how assigning points would be difficult.  Thanks for attaching the graph.  I didn't realise the greenling were scoring that high.

I don't understand that graph.  It doesn't show any Cabezons in the 200 range.    (edit:  not 2009 data)

Right you are. I'll have to defer this one to Brian.

Needless to say, it's not too difficult for us to mine the data (assuming we do it correctly) and come up with PPI numbers.

Not trying to throw another monkey wrench into the program, but what about pinks?? Just seems wrong not to add them in odd years.

Yea I had noticed last year that most peoples biggest fish, pts. wise, were greenling and cab's. Of course I caught my fist cab after the seaon on cab's had ended and never got a greenling so I didn't want to make it sound like I was complaining. But now would seemingly be the time to straighten all of that out.

And yes I think you guys have done a great job in running this competition. I couldn't wait to sign up for the the 2011 and look forward to another great one.
