Hello,

I noticed that a video of mine was re-posted on your site and is now one of the front page videos on msn.com.  How can I submit a claim to protect my video from unauthorized reproduction?  The video in question is titled "Kayaker Catches Octopus".  My original video can be found at youtube.com/megapickles

Thank you,

Hi Jeff,

Normally you would have to fill out a Cease and Desist  order per the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and send it our way. They come in a variety of forms but all that is necessary is to link to the offending video. We will then investigate on our end and remove the video if it is in violation of any copyrights.

In this case I went ahead and checked the youtube link you provided and I can clearly tell that you are the original uploader of this video. We will remove the video immediately for you. There may be a delay in which you can still see references to the content, such as in search results, as they reset their respective caches.

Thanks and if you have any other questions, feel free to write me at this address. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Awesome deal.

I noticed that your original video has hit a zillion hits now.  Too bad you don't get a buck for each view.

Ah man, I saw that video on PinoyPride.com and thought it was awesome.

(I think you have a few more copyright violators out there).

Anyway, congrats Jeff on the most views ever for a "kayak fishing" video on youtube (oh yeah and the whole AOTY thing I suppose).

You've got some work ahead of you Jeff.  That video has been copied a bunch without any credit to you.  Several boards have linked to the original but several others like ebaum's world have simply ripped the video and re-posted.

Makes you wonder how many posts this video might actually have.

Time to find a way to add a watermark to each frame of your movies so that it can't be easily changed by the amateur video hacker.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I've seen it linked on a ton of other random video sites and I'm not worried about most of them since they aren't hosting the video, they're just linking to it and I still get credit for those in a roundabout way.  I saw the one on ebaums, the one on PinoyPride.com, and there are a couple on youtube just to name a few.  Ebaums actually has a really good article on how to submit DMCA claims so I'll use their info as a template and have my legal council help me with the details of a Cease & Desist order.  ;)  Who would've thought that posting fishing videos could turn out to be such a PITA!   :angry3:

Time to find a way to add a watermark to each frame of your movies so that it can't be easily changed by the amateur video hacker.

I tried to put an annotation at the end of the video but in order to embed a watermark on the video you would have to upload a totally new video and lose all the view counts.  It doesn't matter though.  According to copyright laws you don't need to have anything on the video saying it's yours to enforce your copyright, you just need to be able to prove you're the original owner of the video.  Luckily that's pretty easy for me to do.

I was thinking more along the lines of your next awesome kayak fishing video.  Get a watermark on that one, so it is safe.
