I don’t want to sound dumb but can you back peddle this yak to hold station while you drop back with your line in the water? In other words can you use the drive in reverse?"

I read on one fishing site that you can install the drive backwards and backtroll facing downstream. I haven't tried it myself, but I just confirmed that the Mirage drive will seat in backwards correctly, and that the pedals will swivel around to be usable. Of course, then you have the reverse problem of no forward drive.

I wouldn't recommend seating the drive in backwards while in a river.  It is most certainly a place where you must be able to react quickly to avoid hazards.  Working with a backwards drive will give you a severe handicap in that regard.

I'll be hitting up Fish Lake in the Steens late this August. 
Hoping that the upper Steens loop will open by then!

They were working on the South loop last week.  The North side was open all the way to the top.

Any tips on lures/gear for that lake?

I haven't seen any prices on the Hobies at New Adventures website.I know kardinal_84 paid something lke $2300 for his outback recently.but that incliuded shipping it to Alaska.Next month I'll be moving to Raymond Wa-----so Portland isn't that far away.Can anyone throw out some dollar numbers,please ?
I have already told Jammer that we need to get together and he's all  for it.As much as I love Alaska....I need water that is liquid not solid for more than 1/2 the year.So I'm coming back to Washington.Be seeing some of you all soon..........

I felt stupid for not letting you try it.  My mind was in the "get off the water" mentality last time.  Lets hook up once more before you head south!  Fish are in the WATER!

I love my new outback.  I will say so far, the only thing I can say bad about it is one of the great features.  The side rails and high sides make it so that I can't easily put my legs over the sides.  Now that I am peddling I don't do it as often but it was easier to fish when the sides weren't so high.  It used to be a comfortable position on my mini-x (which is about as wide but not as high) but in the outback it feels like I am doing the splits.  A VERY MINOR complaint.  I will say that in my outback, I think I could fall asleep in it on a calm day or a small lake.  No way I could on my mini-x...nodded off a few times and was always "jarred" back awake when I felt like I was going to tip the kayak from leaning over since I was literally sitting on top of the yak versus almost in it like the outback.  Not sure "sleepability on water" is a category even worth considering when purchasing a kayak though!  lol.

Doing a group buy may be tough as Hobie sets the retail prices.  Don't expect much, but I will ask.

Craig how do you think we took the pictures ? Jammers right I am hooked. Having your hands free is such a very big plus. The yak I was on had the oversized rudder and turbo fins. It took a second to figure out the turning radius but it turned on a dime and you could use the rudder to position yourself exactly where you wanted to make casts. The stability is rock solid no matter how many boats wakes came by, they were not even noticeable. We were out for about 4 hrs and the seat was very comfy. It was as if I had been on this yak for years, what a dream to ride. I will be getting together with Jammer or NDog and get mine on order. If we can get a group order going and save a few bucks all the better. I would spend the cash I save on accessories anyway. So either way I will be getting an Outback. I can’t wait so I can pimp her out. Thanks again to Jammer for taking me out on the Willamette Your the bomb.
