When I bought my Outback I also bought a Hobie beach cart with the balloon sand tires. After going fishing with Jammer and seeing how easy it was for him to float his yak and pull the wheels off, I thought maybe the sand tires were not the ticket for everyday use. The wheels are so boyant that they are though to get off, or it could just be me :o. Well I did not want to buy a second cart so I was going to drill a hole through my axle and use the buy a pair of Eva wheels. The sand tires are much wider than the Eva wheels, but I decided not to drill the axle. Not to mention that drilling through stainless steel on a 1/2 round rod would be a pain so here is what I did.
Got the Eva wheels went to the local steel yard and found some stock that had the right ID. Then it was off to the hardware store for some spacers and 2 pins. It works like a charm and I can still use my beach tires when I get around to going out in the big Pond. Here are some pictures of the set up.

That's awesome Paul. Thanks for sharing your details and pics with the group. I may do the opposite and order some beach wheels to swap out

Great idea Firebunker! I missed this post and just posted a request for this type of system.  Do you mind sharing where you bought the spacer material? I have no idea where to buy nice stainless pipe like that. Thanks again for sharing a great idea.

Pdx I bought my stock at Clackamas Steel they are on 16022 Southeast Evelyn Street, Clackamas, OR 97015-9519 I found it them in the used steel area. You just have to look around or ask someone working there what your looking for. The office is a good place to check.

Jammer - I had the same thought,  as I have a cart with the heavy duty foam wheels, but I think the axles on the beach carts are much longer to accommodate the wider beach wheels, so we would have to add axle extensions somehow. Not impossible, but more work than cutting tubes for sleeves. Maybe sleeves with axle extensions on the ends? Or axle extensions that are turned down to slip inside the existing axles?

The Hobie beach tires have an inserts in the axle bushings that makes the inner diameter smaller to fit the Hobie axle.  If you bought regular Wheel-eez beach tires, the axle they were designed for (at least the ones that came off my Wheel-eez cart) is 3/4 inch OD aluminum tube, which would allow you to put sleeves on the Hobie cart and extend the axle on both sides allowing for the use of beach tires.

Since you are only going to use the stainless tubing as a spacer, you can save yourself some looking around and just use some 1/2" ID PVC as your spacers.

Oops! You already have the beach cart with balloon tires.  I thought you were in Jammer's predicament of having to lengthen the axle.  I should pay more attention next time.    :)

Oh, and I second Insayn's suggestion on the PVC.  It is cheap and easy to cut.  I just tried this stuff (1/2 inch) that I got awhile back from Home Depot and it slides right on.  It is a little loose, but it should work fine.
