Those are some nice fish! I may have to re-configure my cataraft. I have it set up for the winter already but  for sledding instead of fishing.

Thx all!  What A BLAST!

Beartoothclaw, the only modification from a fishing point of view is you need to be able to troll at minimum 30ft down and sometimes 80+ feet. 30 u can do with planers and weights. 80 might be tough without a downrigger.

Great Report Rudy!  I am intrigued by your downrigger.  I've got to get me one of them.  ;D  Looks pretty slick.   8)

Thanks!  The downrigger is a game changer for me.  I thought I posted a blog on how I did it but someone else asked and I didn't see it.  So I may just do that.  Definitely read zee's article on the front page.  I have it mounted on a 360 degree rotating base and I also have a chunk of plastic cutting board on the inside of the kayak to act as a giant washer.  It's not enough though.  There is still too much play in the downrigger for my liking.  So bigger plate on bottom AND top going to be added this winter.

But with my extensive research and limited experience, my advice is to not waste your time with a lake downrigger,  Get a full size manual downrigger.  You will need MINIMUM 6lbs weight to troll typical salmon gear with big flashers.  I am going to go with 8lbs ball and test adding a flasher to the ball and maybe even another one on to the line.  If I can get away with using a flasher on the ball, I am going to make a few attempts (probably next year) and use either my 4,6, or 9wt flyrods and my ultralight gear for salmon!  Can you imagine catching one of these kings on a 4wt?  Why not?  Nothing to snag on in the ocean and its just going to tow you around anyways!
