I got a Stohlquist Fisherman PFD for Christmas (and a SPOT).  I actually like my mother-in-law.   ;D

Another cord of firewood and I can get a VHF.  2 more and a GPS/fishfinder will follow me home.

Drysuit arrived today.  Got a bunny-suit liner and Cross 4 booties.

Question - Is it normal for the crotch on a drysuit to be so low?  Or should I have gotten a size down?

Just pull it up and pull the elastic drawstring around the waist tight.   ;)

I might have grown up near Philly, so although I know how use "Yo!", I don't think anyone will ever mistake me for that kind of cool.

Andrew. You don't want the crotch area too tight. When we practice self rescue on Saturday,
you need to leave ample room there for the shock zone effect. >:D

Ok to help with the decision to go waders and top or dry suit, i suggest folks pick up the current issue of fly fisherman magazine and the the article " the big swim"

In it a guide and river photographer with 30 years of in water experience reccomends you use 2 wader belts if possible especially if you are wearing a jacket or some kind of dry top over the waders.

The article also mentions the Simms wader safety video as a must have in you safety training library.

This comes on the heels of 4 wader related drowning deaths in less than a years time among some very experienced and some not so experienced big river fishermen.

Me? After reading that I'm gonna find a way to come up with the scratch for a full dry suit.  Also gotta invest in some more wading safety gear......

remember that most people river fishing are not wearing pfd's.

after spending 2+ hours jumping in and out of my kayak wearing waders and a drytop, i did not have any water come from the waist and that was wearing breathable waders with no belt... just the seal from the drytop.  all of it came from the non-rubber gasket neck on my drytop that allowed small bits of water in.  after all that time actually standing on the kayak and jumping in the water... there was not enough water to worry about.

the most important thing whether wearing a drysuit or waders and drytop is to keep a pfd on at all time while on the water.

I'll put up a seperate post with the full report, but yesterday in my maiden voyage I was very happy with the performance of the Super Nova Angler.  Having skipped the dry top and waders step I can't make a real comparison.  But I am glad I spent the extra on the drysuit.  Fish finders and such are much less important and if I have to wait a bit to get some of that kind of stuff because I spend so much more on the drysuit than a dry top (I already have waders) that's OK.
