Calender of Coming Events

  I have only been a member of this forum since last spring.I appreciate all of the camraderie,the information shared so freely,and the sometimes humorous tales that are told.
  In an effort to become more involved I often look through older threads trying to glean info or find out about coming events --and there is where I am having some difficulty.
  For you guys that have been here a while---many of the abbreviations you use for upcoming events make sense.To some  guys who have yet to participate in them--its like your speaking Greek.And unfortunately I don't speak greek at all.Call me old fashion if you want (I am)  but when an initial post is made--would it be possible to spell out what that event is.As an example ---ORC....is that Oregon River Classic ?I am not trying to be ignorant...but I am at this point.

  I've looked at the calender in the top headings and would like to see tournaments,get togethers,and special events placed on there for all to share and be able to make plans for.Some folks need to make long range plans to be able to participate in events that might be more than a 10 minute drive away.

  Moderators--can you guys help out with this ? Please ?

I had thought that it was started in Oregon because of the ability to catch and retain lings, and other rock fish, is not so strictly regulated.

it's been kicked around a few times. still gets the respect of an old tin can at a redneck wedding though.

biggest problem is all the regs and how short in some spots the seasons are. ore. is far more liberal and it was also cited as a more central location for our primary majority membership.

that doesnt mean it can't be done, or shouldnt be. there's also been a San Juan/Sucia islands multi day multi member trip in the past partially hosted by HBH and several others. add in trips to BC to Sombrio and a few other places, too.

Early on, before i joined in '08, polepole , zee and co. did a few trips to the dungeness spit area, once getting caught on the mud flats there.

so, the washington possibilites are there. getting spark plugged, organized and actually executed has always been the largest hurdle in washington for some reason. maybe it's just becuase there's a lot of independent minded people, or it could be due to having to deal with all the alternate route planning on the wet side of the state.

so don't give up. it could still happen, heck you could even be the one to make it happen.

  Thanks for the replies and the links guys.The ORC looked like a heck of a good time that I'll be putting on my calender.Lots of participation,lots of awesome fish,lots of good food,lots of good beer.........does it get any better.Maybe better weather...
  The same idea could happen in Washington.Next years Gardiner Salmon Tournament might be a starting point to build from.........maybe something like that in the summer but make it a WRC.Just thinking out loud...............

Its a quite a drive but Hobuck would be an awesome venue for bottomfishing.

The Sound (or even most of the Straights) wouldn't work for a WRC, but MA1-3 and MA 4 west of BT line would work.  Ling season is mid-APril thru mid Oct with a 24" min and limit of 2.  Rockfish is open with a limit of 10 year round and no min. size out there, and so is Cabezon with a limit of 2.  Total combined bottom fish limit is 12 per day.

One possible issue with both Hobuck and La Push is that it's on tribal land.  Tribes sometimes have rules that can make it undesirable to have a competition like this.  I don't know that much about the Makah and Quilutte to say how they'd handle a group of non-tribal fishermen like us.

It doesn't need to be a formal competition, just a bunch of people fishing. In terms of tribal issues, I can't think of any reason why it would be a problem, there are a ton of surfers, kayak surfers and touring kayakers there.

You should be more concerned about the surf launch/landing than any tribal issues

I credit / blame that same video for sparking my interest to try kayak fishing.  "even after finding out the opening scene was sped up and kayaks really don't go that fast"

So, what happens with the fish that are brought in during the ORC?  Do they get cooked up for the dinner that night, with any excess going home with whoever caught it?  Or does all the meat go to a food bank sort of charity? 

I know that with the Bloody Decks forum when they run their OR and WA Tuna Classics all the meat goes to a commercial cannery and then gets donated to the food banks.

Not saying we should do that, just curious how it works.
