No drain plug, gulp!
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:34:36 pm »
I went out kayaking with a friend yesterday in the sunshine. It was a gorgeous day and all was well until I started feeling more and more unstable in my kayak for some reason. We were rafted up and I was thinking my buddy was messing around with me but then I realized I was in trouble and was full of water. Thankfully I had a bilge pump handy and bailed myself out enough to sprint to shore but still far from the boat ramp. All of a sudden it hit me, I had unscrewed the drain plug the last time I stored my kayak and didn't think about it until my hull was filled up with water.

After pumping out most of the water, I had to find something to plug the drain plug hole. I tried a stick among other objects to no avail till I saw my tub of gulp. A grub was cut down to fit the hole and worked surprisingly well. We stayed out another hour or so so that I have a plug of gulp to thank for salvaging a day on the water.

Its a stupid mistake, forgetting about one critical part and not one I'll ever repeat!

Glad you are OK. Impressed that you plugged the hole and kept fishing. Reminds me of the black night in the holy grail: it's just a scratch.

Been there, done that---in my 15 Arima PB!!!  It's VERY EMBARRASSING to have to ziP back to the boat launch and cut in line, pleading stupidity...glad it worked out for you!

Right on Fishnut. I love those French guys in the movie. I think I had better go away before you taunt me a second time :)

(just don't forget that Gulp shrivels up when they're dry)

Nice save!  Good preparation with the bilge pump.

Most plugs have a stay so they can be opened but not detached without pulling pretty hard.  Not yours?

I must have left it detached and it fell off when I was putting on the car or during the drive. I've already ordered two extra drain plugs!
