I realize that there's a lot of overlap, but it appears that most if not all of the suggestions are geared towards paddle boats. Are there any good reads that specifically target those that peddle?

Steven Krauzer's  "Kayaking" was a mid 90's read and labeled as the basics for open water and WW kayaking. It does have the basics for both styles, but it is packed full of river skills. From river interpretation to developing the skills to run them, this book was huge for me. The gear of course is not as advanced as what is being used now but the information is timeless for river runners. This is especially helpful for those who want to fish moving water. I will likely read it again soon.

For sitting around the fire with your team, sharing bumper sticker style wisdom,  there is no better book that I can think of than  Corran Addison's "Kayaker's little book of Wisdom".
Ultralight and fun but still packed with powerful safety reminders that stick.

"All of your constitutional rights are lost once you enter the rapid."

"Everybody swims eventually"

"The two most important people on an expedition are a Mechanic and an EMT."

"You cannot escape your problems on the river but it's a great place to solve them."

"You can never teach too many women to paddle."
and the like.
Its pocket size and a good book if you enjoy reading on the water.
It also has quotes from other paddlers and assorted historical figures.
This book has always inspired reflection on past adventures and the disasters that made them great.
A sweet find at a used book store.

"Deep Trouble" and "More Deep Trouble" are a compilation of kayak calamity and sometimes fatality.
Out of 50+ documented situations, most happen in NWKA territory.
If you just wanted to read one I would go with the first.
Deep Trouble is packed with excellent lessons in surviving and not.
Add to cart.

Hey Hydro!

Great column.  I just read "Deep Trouble" and just downloaded "More Deep Trouble".  As a new kayaker, the first book really helped me look at safety issues I may not have thought about for quite a while.  My wife's aunt lives on Whidbey Island so we'll be spending some time up there this spring/summer...  Was interesting reading the fast currents they have up there...

Anyway--great post; I have about 5 more reads from others here!

You guys are awesome!   Thanks!

Im glad that you read and enjoyed Deep Trouble and the thread Brent.
Stuff WILL go wrong in this game and its nice to have the readiness to help make it home.

One thats probably not as applicable to most, but is a current focus of mine, while working on my "streamanship".
I thought it was enjoyable and inspiring but not much of a focus on skills. It did have some nice reminders of how easy it is to get in trouble swimming rocky hydrology. Im glad I read it but it is not a "must read" recommendation.
