Cjweinhe only has 4ft of width in the garage for a kayak trailer. After a few PM’s and some texts and emails. We found out that the only thing narrow enough is a jet ski trailer but couldn’t nab a cheaper used one and new was $2000<. So cjweinhe decided to buy all the components and material to custom build one with a little mojo help. I’ll let him post up the material list and cost, and I’ll post up the build and progress (close to done) been too busy to post up a longer post.
He decided to go with 3ft X 9ft for the deck with a removable rack via stake pockets and pins with a separate set of removable top bars over the first rack. Started with the deck all squared up and tacked then welded the joints alternating corners and sides as to not overheat and warp the tube. Got the stake pockets and taillight housings on. We’re making it a tilt deck like my snow bear knock off, bolted at the back and pinned at the front. The axle is being custom built in Forest Grove since no one makes one that narrow. Still need to weld on the front pin box, fender brackets and a few minor things..... then smooth out the corners and edges.

Almost looks like a trailer, need to flatten the welds a little on the top deck surface, drill a few holes in the tabs for the deck to bolt down... then sandblast, paint and bolt it all together.

Are those custom tail light brackets or did you order them?  Thinking of doing something like those for mine for good measure.
Kayaking without wearing a PFD is like drunk driving.  You can get away with it for a while, but eventually someone dies.

Forgive my... Well not sure wether to call it ignorance or not but why would you want a trailer for your yak? I could see using one if you were transporting more than two on a regular basis and if you are I apologize for asking I'm just curious. Don't get me wrong it is appealing to think about but it'd just be one more thing I have to register every year and I'm not a fan of buying tabs for my suv as it is...

In Oregon we don't have to register trailers under 1,000 pounds. Which is pretty groovy until you haul one to Mexico and border patrol asks you to prove it's yours on the way back north.

In general, lightweight trailers are way better than car topping. Better gas mileage, you aren't dumping sand/saltwater/fish blood, cabbie puke, bait residue onto your rig.

I've seen used rack'n'rolls as cheap as $800 on Craigslist. Why you would use steel on something like this is my question? If you are going small, why not go lightweight?

Sometimes it's because of the vehicle.  I keep threatening to get a trailer to haul a single kayak behind my small (Ford Transit) van because the roof rack is taller than 6-feet, and I'm not.

Mojo, are you able to weld aluminum stock or is it an issue of material cost?  Just curious...
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

Correction:
You do not have to title or register trailers with a loaded weight of 1,800 pounds or less.

There ordered, e-trailer I believe, but lots of places sell them. Bolt on or weld on.

Ok just finished my cold homemade pizza that TLW made for dinner, still delicious BTW ....( god I owe her BIG TIME) and finally sat down to relax. Corey towed his trailer home today so he can get a deck on it and some stake rail sides for the occasional mulch hauling job to justify a custom trailer to his TLW. We still need to put side markers on the fenders. Pam and I followed him to bay city to check tracking and it tracks great. Hers a few pictures of it in my driveway getting lit (the trailer not me)  >:D
