Hey everyone,

my name is William and I am from North Portland. Recently I purchased the Pelican catch 120 (fantastic kayak) and I've been taking it to my favorite spots, Henry Hagg, North Fork, Benson, the easier kayak fishing spots.....

I've been watching tons of videos on youtube of guys kayak fishing tillamook bay for lingcod and crabbing.

I want to work up to being able to fish tillamook bay, but there is some fear involved. What are some advice y'all have about fishing the bay? Is there anything to be concerned about as far as tides go, weather, water activity? From the videos I have watched it looks decently calm but I don't know if that is something you have to watch for in advance like tides charts and what not.

Any advice is very much appreciated, thanks!

-William

The flow of water can be very strong in Tillamook Bay, DO NOT launch more then 3 hours before LOW tide. The afternoon winds can get strong so morning launches are needed. If that makes sense, I rarely do!
You want a low tide around 0700-1100 as well as no weather fronts moving through. Don’t go out alone unless your familiar with Tillamook Bay, or you might end up meeting the local Coast Guard guys as you get flushed out the bay into the big blue.
The bay is the perfect place for salt water introduction as long as your with an experience kayaker. DO NOT GO ALONE the first time. Be prepared to peddle or paddle hard if you get to close to the end of the south wall on the outbound tide. It got me yesterday when a ball of seaweed wrapped my prop, cjweinhe and Bud gave some bow line assisting to keep me in the bay while I cleared the prop. Brings up another good piece of advice... keep a bow line on your kayak that your fishing partner can easily grab to assist with a tow.

A lot of that good advice applies to estuaries elsewhere, too.  Tidal currents can whup your ass in a lot of places!

Thanks everyone for the advice. Is there a separate page for scheduled group meetup for kayak fishing the bays?

Again, thank you everyone for the solid advice!!!

Just keep an eye on what Mojo Jojo posts.  He's our resident god of Tillamook Bay.
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

I will echo again, because it's that important: THE TIDES ARE CRITICAL!

Also, there's fun fishing to be had there, but I wouldn't count on getting lings all of the time. It definitely does happen occasionally but you're going to be much more productive fishing for perch and rockfish and crab.

Keep safe and have fun!
