A First

We all remember our first- kiss, dance, car, house and first fish from a kayak. Didn't matter if it was a 4 inch whopper or a fish hanging off the hawg trough it was a first and it was a monster. So here we are today with another first, not mine but a really good friend-Tinker. As most of you all know we have been chasing salmon on the lower Coquille with our fly rods. Tinker decided to up the game and try his hand at crabbing, no not the kind that I did with my fly but with actual crab traps. Well lets just say it was a stellar day-not a big tide swing no wind and blue bird weather. We set our traps and started fishing. Notice right away that Tinker kept looking over his shoulder at the crab float. This kept up for about an hour or so, then he was hoovering around them. Ask if he wanted to pull them and he said no lets wait a while longer but the look in his eyes was that of a small boy on Christmas morning running into the living room seeing the tree with lights and the presents. Waited a bit longer and pulled the trap with words of encouragement and some advise here and there. Trap in his lap with the oceans bounty in it( I think there was 8 or 9 crabs in the trap), he began sorting them out the first few where females and then he got into the males and no small males to boot(the smallest was a little under 7 inches and the biggest went over 8 1/2 inches) not bad at all for your first crab trap pull. In the end he ended up with 4 crabs, would have stayed out longer for more but the tide had changed and the wind started to come up plus we was getting a little hunger.

I like the way you remember it more than I cared for the actual experience.  Crabs?  Spiders you can't drown.

I believe he was too busy laughing to get a picture.  I, for one, am grateful he doesn't carry a GoPro.

Scott, I promise that one day we'll go fishing and I won't put on a spectacle.
