I plan to hit this fishery a lot this year given the extended season, so a running thread makes sense.  Here's my report for yesterday:

Arrived to a relatively empty parking lot around 0530.  Launched onto a decent ocean, somewhat confused 3-4 foot swell.  As soon as I passed the 1/2 mile buoy, I came onto some diving murrs and marked a nice bait ball.  Thought this would be the start of something special, but it soon dissipated and I was left with a veritable desert of an ocean.  I made loops trolling from just outside the reef out to the 100 foot contour, but couldn't find any slicks or trash lines.  Water temp was 52 degrees.  I fished from 6 to 20 pulls down with a flasher/cut plug herring.  Had one tentative bite on the cut-plug at 6 pulls late in the morning, but he didn't stick.

Radio chatter was negative.  The charters were talking back and forth asking if they found anything, and most of the talk was like "found a great slick at 240, but no bites." When I got back to the ramp around noon, I saw one lone coho at the cleaning station.  The guy cleaning the fish said it was the only one they caught for the boat of four anglers.  At least it was a nice fish: 8 or 9 pounds, really nice for late June.  The reports from Newport were equally poor, with one coho and three Chinook checked in.

I'll be giving it another shot on ORC weekend.  Hope to see a few other kayakers trolling that weekend--it helps to have multiple lines in the water to find the fish!  Surprisingly, I was the only kayaker in Depoe yesterday.

Thanks for the report. I am going to go out on Wednesday. Probably try for a decent Cabezon 1st. Wes thinking of trolling some after that. Depending on the ocean and how long I bang the bottom, I may troll out to Halibut depths and give that a go.

There was a semi decent coho bite out of PC yesterday.  I released 2 natives and saw some dory boats do well.  One boat of 3 anglers limited out with a nook in the mix as well.  Most of the action was out a ways, 135 to 170 ft.  Not many rips up this way either.

Today was a different story.  Caught a jack chinook, had a drive dive by and nothing else.  The hot boat yesterday that limited could not find a fish today either, strange.

Thanks Onefish. We're the fish that were biting down deep, or just that is the water depth below where the biters were?

Best report I've heard so far!  Thanks.  From what I've gathered, the bite off Newport/Depoe typically picks up starting in late July as fish slowly head north towards the Columbia.  It was super good fishing here the last two weeks of July last year, but there was also an abundance of slicks and trash lines to fish that year.  Seeing a vast expanse of nothing on the surface is a bit disheartening when looking for coho.

I might jump on a PB out of Newport for a quick troll Wednesday morning.  If I do, I'll post up a report.  I heard the water was super cold close to port (46-47 degrees) and boats had to travel over three miles out to reach anything over 50 degrees.

2/2 today at PC, 1 keeper.  Water temp was decent, 49 at the beach getting up to 53 out deep.  Fish are around just scattered and not a lot of rips still.

Sorry Drifter I missed your question somehow.  The fish have been in the top 25 feet off water for me.  Those deep depths are just for location purposes.

Good luck!!

Nice job, thank you! The forecast keeps changing, so I don't know when I will be trying, but it will be soon. We will be at the coast the next two weekends.

Nice work Onefish!  Shoot, your reports are making me wonder if I should drive up to PC for my early coho fix.

I bailed on fishing from my buddy's boat today.  But I didn't miss much: no bites for them fishing out of Depoe.

Yeah, it might be worth your while.  Wife and I landed 5 this morning in the Oasis, 2 were hatchery.  Others were out there giving it hell as well.  Water temp 52-55, but wind turned south as we were headed out.

Despite some good-looking rips and slicks this morning, the coho were nowhere to be found.  But some Chinook showed up!  I went 1 for 3 this morning on Chinook.  Pulling a whole green label herring behind a Sweet Abby Shortbus flasher @ 20 pulls.  The first Chinook was around 10-12 pounds, lost at the boat.  Felt a little dejected with that one, but this guy made up for it.  Helluva fighter, with some blazing surface runs and dives to 70 feet down.  The bait and rips disappeared by 1100, and so did the bite.  I'll be back at it tomorrow!
