On Tuesday I hit the Portland harbor to see if I could find a sturgeon for some fishing action.  I spent 2.5 hours on the water.  30 minutes fishing, 2 hours fighting.  Hooked 5, landed 4, broke my rod on the last one.  Fish were everywhere and all were large. All four were 5-6 feet and two completely cleared the water.  My kingdom for a GoPro that day.

Check it out if you just want some great action.

Caught them all on squid 500 yards from the ramp on Swan Island.

Perfect title!  There's nothing like a little sturgeon action to remind you how much fun you can have on a kayak.

What do you use for rod/reel/line and terminal tackle for those? I'm trying to gear up for next year and building my wife a Christmas shopping list. In 2018, I want to catch a king salmon and a sturgeon from a kayak. :)

I use the exact same set up for Salmon and Sturgeon.  8Â’.5 foot 10-30# rod (as much as you can afford)  I use Northriver rods from FishermanÂ’s and they work fine.  Okuma Cold Water Low Profile reel.  50# braid mainline, sliding swivel etc.  For sturgeon I use 4Â’ feet of BradÂ’s 80# braid to 7/0 hooks.  Salmon is the usual suspects.  ProTroll with herring, 3.5 SimonÂ’s, BradÂ’s super baits/cut plug.  I have 2 identical setups but usually only take one in the kayak.

BTW, took my son and some friends out yesterday in the PB.  We landed so many we lost count.  15-16+.  All good size but two.  A kayaker landed one right next to us that was massive.

That is pretty awesome! I haven't caught a Sturgeon from a kayak in a while. When you say in the harbor.... so you aren't even out to the main river? How deep are you anchoring, or are you just tied up to something?

I was fishing just short of the main river just inside the last dry dock that says Vigorous.  Depth around 40’.  In the Kayak I just float around.  In the PB I anchored.  Almost no current so easy to fish.  Was out last Sat and got another 4 all good sized.  Pic is from the PB

Today was another fun day in the lagoon!!  It is fun watching the fish jump while waiting for one to bite (which wasn't very long)!  Had to quit because of tired arms after several sleigh rides!  Great crew out there today.  Recommend giving it a try for some fun catching!

What kinds of licenses/permits would a WA resident need to come and fish for sturgeon there in Portland from a kayak? If all of my kayak upgrades and gear work as expected in a test in local waters tomorrow, I'm thinking that it's time to come and catch a dinosaur. :)

Edit: I have read through the Oregon regulations, but it's not clear if this is close enough to the Columbia river to let my WA license be good there, if I can just get a 1-day permit, or if I need a non-motorized boat permit for a kayak. Thanks!

You will need full oregon license and invasive species.  your wa license only works on the Columbia not in the Willamette at all.

Or since it's the end of the year (Oregon licenses go by calendar year) you're likely better off buying a 1 day license and the 1 day endorsement (I think it's $1 extra.)
