2016 ORC Update!!
Ok guys, I need to drop in and let you all know where we stand. A handful of NWKA people who have been involved in planning the ORC for several years now are working to get details lined up. We’re not quite ready to make an official announcement yet for the ORC, simply because we’re still working on getting a lot of the big details hammered out, such as main sponsors, top prizes, format, etc. Here’s what I can say so far:
-The tournament is going to be held on July 9th at Depoe Bay, OR.
-The tournament format will be a "Best of 4 Slam". You total weight of your single best catch for each of the following species lingcod, cabezon, rockfish and greenling. Partial slams will be considered.
-The tournament HQ is going to be at Chinook Bend Campground - the same place as in years past.
-Next Adventure is not the point of contact for information pertaining to the Oregon Rockfish Classic, NWKA is.
-Registration for the event is not yet available. We're working on setting up a system for registration fees as well as deciding on a price.
-If you have already paid your registration for the event through Next Adventure's website prior to 4/18 you should be getting a refund very soon. If you don't see a refund by 4/25 call the shop and they can help.
-We understand that there are a lot of people on the forum who are excited to help with various parts of the tournament. We will be/have been reaching out to those of you who have coordinated things for the event in previous years. If you have worked on something for the tournament in the past and have not heard from anyone, please sit tight.
Thanks for your patience!

So does this mean next adventure isn't running it anymore?

So does this mean next adventure isn't running it anymore?
Next Adventure has been a major player for the ORC for years and will likely continue to be a major player for many more years. However, we're still trying to find the right balance between who does what. The ORC has traditionally been a completely in-house NWKA operation. This year it's looking like we will be steering back in that direction more.

Thank you NA for trying, but this is good news! So glad to hear this. In all our "dysfunction" It was a better sense of our community event. Drawing from the strength of our numbers to share and contribute to help out can go so much further. Count me in!

What happens if we already bought our entry fee through NA?

I would think you could call and ask for a refund.

What happens if we already bought our entry fee through NA?
Good question. I'd like to know that answer too.

Ah yes, thank you for bringing this up!
As of this weekend refunds were on their way for those of you who have already paid. This is a result of the fact that we don't have some important details quite nailed down yet, like registration price. Sorry for the confusion on this item.
I'll update the original post to reflect this information.
bsteves, can you please sticky this thread for now?
-
Thank you for all the info and clarification on already-paid fees. Looking forward to hearing more. Thank you to all the people involved working to make this a great event!
-
Yes, thanks for the update on the fees paid. I'm looking forward to seeing where ORC goes this year. I've got the time blocked off to go. I will admit I was starting to make contingency plans to fish somewhere on the WA coast that weekend if things hadn't picked up with ORC planning.
-
NWKA is calling the shots now and all complaints will result in a swift purple nurple with fish grips. >:D
-
Thank you so much Jeff and the other guys that are making this happen.
Knew you'd be posting something soon.
All is still good in our world........

TACOS!
Word. Tacos. Testify!!
Yea though I paddle through the valley of the shadow of skunk, I shall fear no snag for Ron and Roland are with us, their rod and reel comfort us. Andrew prepares a taco feed table before us in the presence of our piscatorial enemies; You have anointed my jig head with herring oil; My Solo cup overflows with Ninkasi.

Amen Brother!

-
Registration is not yet available so please sit tight on that one. We're working on setting up a system for registration fees as well as deciding on a price.

I got reservations at chinook bend on the siletz river for ORC. Is this the same one as the tournament. It is just a little farther from Depot Bay than I expected and want to confirm I am not in the wrong campground. Here is the address that I booked
2920 Siletz Hwy
Lincoln City, OR 97367
Thanks for your help!

That's correct. It's only about a 15 minute drive, unless you drive like Ling ling, herro? in which case it's about 10 minutes.
-
Thanks redbeard! It looked like a longer drive on a map. I have never been and for some reason after watching the YouTube videos I thought it was closer. It looks like a great campground. I got a 30 ft spot for my pull behind. Anyone is welcome to stop by and pull up a chair. Do they have fire pits? If not I will call and see if we could bring a metal one

Most of the camp sites have fire pits. If not you can move one to where you need it/. They are truck rim sized for the most part. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

So, when will the payment details get posted?

Any word on when registration will start?

It sounds like very soon. Our NWKA folks have got it all lined up but are waiting for someone else to hit the on switch. Hang in there.

Registration should be available by the end of next week.

Awesome! Great work to the team putting this together. Cant wait!
-
Any updates on the event? I know we are getting close!
-
Event or not, I'll be there. ;D Camp site is reserved. No turnin' back now...
-
Paid up. Thanks for getting that up!
-
Sorry it took so long. Insurance can be a pain. Lots of details overlooked in the past that opened up all the volunteers to personal liability. :o

Ummmm... What is a "Pedestrian Safety Operation" for us Lincoln City neophytes? I'm envisioning something akin to bait cars but instead the plain clothes police officers walk in front of moving cars.

Crosswalks.

ORC is two weeks away and is coming together nicely. Cabelas has sweetened the winners pot with a $150 gift card for 1st place, $75 gift card for 2nd and a $50 card for 3rd. Konezone has donated a flasher for each Captains bag. They have also given us an awesome kill bag for one of our raffle prizes.
Mark Collette has volunteered to help out in the weigh-in station. Thanks Mark! If you are interested, we need volunteers to help out during check out and weigh-in. Stuffing Captains bags Friday afternoon is always a treat. We would welcome any help you are willing to give our way.
As always " tight lines"

I am going to volunteer Tanner to help stuff captains bags. He won't be busy otherwise. 8)
-
We'll need some large coolers & lots of ice for the beer. I've got one large cooler we can use. Who can help me tote those 15 cases up to Chinook Bend from Eugene? Any volunteers?
-
Can't help with the transport, but I can at least bring a large cooler. It will be at Chinook Bend.

Anyone online right now? Need input. We, Doug/Crash and I, are in a huge quandary on whether to make the 8 hour drive from Humboldt CA. The weather, well we have camped & fished in rain (GS events), but the ocean forecast is continuing to deteriorate.
What is the viability of the event realistically being a go?
-
Right now the bar camera shows that the ocean is perfectly calm. However, the National Marine Service is predicting 5'-7' swells along with 11 to 14 knot winds for Saturday. There is definitely a front moving in tonight / tomorrow morning. I'm not going to guess whether the Coast Guard will close the bar under those conditions, but it is certainly possible. I am going with the idea that it may be just a beer drinking weekend around the campfire, but it is only a 2˝ hour drive for me.
At last year's ORC, by noon the conditions were just about what is being predicted for this year. I was out there, but it was a lot of work, and most people headed in earlier. If the Coasties let us out, everybody will have to decide for themselves, but it looks to be marginal conditions. If you have a long drive and are only coming to fish, then I would stay home. If you are prepared to make it a social weekend only, then come on out.
-
Thanks for your insights Sherimator. I have been wanting to come to this event for the last 3 years, this being the 4th year, for both fishing and camaraderie. This is not an easy decision on that level, however when we have good conditions here....
-
ok It's 10:30 pm and I just paid my admission fee. I am not planning on fishing this year because of rental property in LC to deal with. However I will bring food and help with cooking if needed. Looking forward to visiting with everyone. Dale
