Does Oregon require a kayak to be registered if using a sail?  I couldn't find anything at the Marine board website that mentions sails, just motors of any king require registration.  Anyone tried the windpaddle sail on your kayak?

Good question.  I believe the state requires all motorized boats and sailboats 12 ft and longer to be registered.

Bsteves is correct.  Here is the info from OSMB.
Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

Thanks!  I don't know why I couldn't find the online details.  My Hobie i11s is 11' so no registration needed. :hello2:

The way I read the regs is like this.

Sailboat 12' and longer = yes.

They clearly specify that ANY type of watercraft with any type of motor must be titled and registered.
They do not extend this same amount of detail regarding sailboats.

Q: Do I need to register my small pontoon boat if it has a motor?
A:
Yes. Any watercraft with any type of motor must be titled and registered with the Marine Board.
A title is required in order to register.

1)obtain the manufacturer's statement of origin and/or bill of sale
2)obtain the application for boat title/registration
3)Submit to the Marine Board with required fees

My Adventure Island is a kayak with sail, not a sailboat that can be used as a kayak.

If the OSMB pushes the issue to fully include kayaks, canoes, logs etc over 12' long with a sail to be registered, then mine is getting a freaking motor as well with said reg.  And then, I'm going to launch it like a boat in every damn boat ramp as if it was a "real" boat, instead of from the beach.   >:(

Yep, I'm trying to find a non-human power source to extend fishing days without being exhausted from pedaling for long hours on the water.  A small trolling motor would do the trick but I just hate the idea of doing all the registration/license stuff and having 3" numbers hanging on my kayak.

I believe that there may be a desk jockey at the OSMB that defaults to say yes that our kayaks (12' and longer) with sails are required to be registered.

The verbage on their site does not describe, list or even indicate that a kayak with a sail falls under the "sailboat" requirements.

If I ever use my sail again, and the bigger if anybody were to pose questions concerning registration, I'll be using Insayn's points/definition/delineation of sailboat vs kayak with a sail - works for me.
