Anywhere near Salem to pick up some rebar?  Is there a better material to weigh down a crab pot?

That is what I use.  You can buy 2ft sections at home depot for about $2 each.  Anything like that will work. I use two pieces in my trap and just use plastic zip ties to hold them in.
Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

Whatever you use, do not spend a lot of money on it.  Crab pots are easy to lose.  I don't use weights in mine for what it's worth.  If the current is that strong, I likely won't be crabbing there.

I usually just steal rebar from a demolition site.

Burchams Metal Recycling in Albany has steel by the pound - I think it's like $0.50/lb.  They have rebar and lots of other solid weighty things you could zip o a crab pot.  Fun place to browse, you'll be surprised at how many projects you'll come up with.

Really ? Someone posts the location of a junkyard, and you (a) don't already know it and (b) haven't been there before ?

This is unpossible.

Cherry City metals is an option in Salem. They have all kinds of cool junk.
I've only crabbed with a wire trap in the ocean twice, but I didn't add weight either time and had no problems.

Ya' gotta remember MoJo's past life........ he was Fred's cousin in junk.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Go to your local Goodwill and pick up some cheap used bar bells.  Usually anything from a 1-10lbs available.
I've even seen dive belt weights on occasion.

Now, Mojo can just wire on spare bits and pieces of that old 454...   If he's not too busy turning it into jigs!  :)

I'm with this. What goes down must come up. Who wants extra to lift from a kayak ?
