The information in this HARBORMASTER announcement is primarily for those who will be participating from power boats and want the FREE one night transient boat stay.
But for those kayakers that are planning to give it a shot too here is the date to mark on your calendar. Unfortunately the way the last two weekends of March fall it means the 2017 date is going to be mid-March which may present some  challenging and cold conditions but ya never know. The organizers always "reserve" one additional weekend in March as the reschedule date in case the entire weekend is a blow off.

In talking with Emily they will have new software running for online registration this year. That will go live on March 1st. They don't have the rules pages set up yet but it will be available when the online registration is launched or earlier. In the meantime you can follow them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/HomerWinterKingSalmonTournament/

2017 Winter King Salmon Tournament

From the Harbormaster:  Are you going to be participating in the Winter King Salmon Tournament?  If so registration will begin March 1st and you do that with the Homer Chamber of Commerce as they are the official host of the event.  You can call them at 907-235-7740 for details.

For participants that plan on staying overnight in the Homer Harbor, PLEASE REGISTER AT THE HOMER PORT AND HARBOR OFFICE BEFOREHAND!  Moorage Agreements can be completed in advance either by visiting our office or printing out the online form and mailing/faxing it in.  Email is port@cityofhomer-ak.gov or fax at 907-235-3152.

We love that we can collaborate with the Chamber in providing one, free night stay for all registered participants.  It's mandatory, though, that you claim your One Free Night coupon (good for either Friday or Saturday night) from the Chamber when registering for the tournament, and then bring that coupon to the Port and Harbor Office to redeem it when you register your vessel.  Additional nights are subject to normal moorage charges.

Also note that there are no charges for the use of the Load and Launch Ramp during winter months.  Fee collection will begin in April.

Super bummed. Derby is same weekend as small schools state basketball tournament. Hoping to watch my nephew win another state title for 1A basketball. The Ninilchik Wolverines are poised for another run at the gold.

Oh well. There is likely to be another derby next year. Nephew is a senior, so this is the last title shot.

Good luck to everyone who fishes the derby. Stay safe.

Don't forget there is the Elks 2 Day "Winter" Feeder King Derby in the Fall. Typically it was the first weekend in October when the fishing regs switch to no recording of winter kings on the license. But because the Board of Fish changed the regulations last December to begin the no recording period starting September 1st, its likely the Elks Club will begin their fund raiser tournament sometime in September when there are many more anglers/boats available to participate. That should also encourage a lot more kayak angler participation too with the warmer weather and plenty of fish.  And a 2 day derby provides plenty of opportunity for a lot of fishing. Last fall they harvested over 2000 pounds of kings in 2 days.

So keep your calendar open in September.

Go Wolverines!

Oh yeah. I fished the Elk's Derby last year. That was great fun. I know the guy who won that derby. (Actually, I know guy who own's/ran the boat that won.) He was fishing right off the end the spit, just like our little Tupperware navy.  It's nice knowing there was no disadvantage from being limited on our range.

The great thing about both the Elks fall season 2 day event and the Chamber of Commerce "spring" 1 day tournament is the addition of a "kayak category" over the last couple of years, due in large part to the tireless efforts of Kardinal_84 and other pioneers to promote kayak fishing in Alaska and get these competitions to recognize this growing group of avid anglers who are ready to take on the challenge too. No finer example of the competitive spirit of kayak anglers than the NO FEAR attitude going nose to nose with the power boats.
