I know a lot of guides are obsessive about using Lemon Fresh Joy to wash their tackle, but what do you do?

I learned an awesome tip from Mursestrong (I believe it was him) and it was to take a small hand sanitizer container (the kind with the little silicon attachment you see at grocery store checkout lines) and empty the sanitizer and fill with the lemon joy, then clip to the PFD when salmon fishing. Keeps it close at hand and makes it much easier to clean the hands and lures/flasher/etc.

Never heard of washing gear with it, but I carry a 2oz squeeze bottle for washing my hands.

Why do they do that.  I see it on sale at the fishing store but never understood what the theory was

What I have been told is that human scent is repulsive to salmon. Heard they don't like dogs either. The Lemon Fresh Joy is supposed to remove all unwanted scents. At first it sounded like BS, but eventually I ended up using it and wearing gloves too. My previous salmon experiences were ocean salmon only, and on the ocean, people tend not to be too compulsive about unwanted scent.

I also wear gloves and wash my hands.  But why is lemon joy the preferred scent.  Or will any soap work?

You would think any soap would work BUT everybody recommends Lemon Fresh Joy. It does smell awful good. LOL

Dunno why lemon scented Joy.  I just read it in a book and thought, "Why not?" although I do wonder why dousing my hands with ReaLemon wouldn't work.  Or a real lemon, for that matter.

The best salmon fisherman I know doesn't use lemon Joy, but he does use soap. And that's all I'm allowed to say.  ;D

I think there is some good evidence that eliminating or covering up terrestrial scents can increase your odds of a strike. But I highly doubt that the superstitious use of lemon Joy in particular matters, just like I don't think it matters if you use black or purple nitrile gloves (or gray or blue...).

I keep a squeeze bottle of lemon Joy in the gear bucket and at the beginning of salmon season I scrub all my Brads and spinners with it too.
I also like to keep a nice fresh banana in the hull for lunch too.  And as I walk by other people's kayaks I rub it on their kayak for good luck.  😉

There are companies that sell fishing scented soaps. Such as an anise soap. I wonder if they add any benefit.

spraying tackle with WD-40 was all the craze for awhile,  thinking that it removed the human scent.

I carry a small Nalgene bottle with a squirt top full of Ultra Joy on the kayak with me at all times.
Comes in very handy for washing fish slime, fish blood, ProCure scent, lunch scent etc off my hands right after contact.

I don't specifically wash each and every lure/jig with it, but I do wash them like I would the dishes in a container with warm water.

At the end of a day of ocean fishing, and after I have removed all the fish from my kill bag, I squirt a dash of Ultra Joy in the kill bag and fill with water.  Then toss all my fishing tools, hog trough, rod holders, game clips, lip grippers, etc into the kill bag and wash everything at once.  Everything comes out squeaky clean.

At camp, I use the same soap for camp dishes.

only non-ultra Lemon Joy around here.

I refill those foaming soap bottles like this:  1/3 non-ultra Lemon Joy, 2/3 water, mix well.

I'm upset that this poll does not allow me to select that I use it as a condiment.  :bs:

Seriously though, I'm a firm believer in keeping your stuff clean.  I always have an TSA approved 3 oz liquid bottle with scent free or lemon joy soap that has a permanent spot in the mesh pocket of my kayak.
