I recently upgraded to a Raymarine Dragonfly 7. Super awesome but eats up the battery. It runs for about 5hrs on a full charge, half of what I got from my Helix. My question is, What are the longest lived compact  batteries you've used.

Toby, you didn't tell us about the battery you're using.  That could help.

If you search, folks were doing a lot of testing of battery output against a test setup.  If you assume the Dragonfly is using .8aH - not accounting for the impedance in your wiring - their results might suggest the best battery for your system.

Or, someone using a Dragonfly Pro 7 might know off hand...
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

The Dragonfly systems are battery hogs.  For example, my Eagle Cuda 250 unit can make an 8ah brick last for three 8 hour days.  My Dragonfly 5 Pro is only good for about 8-9 hours total.  Your's sounds a bit more of a hog than mine.

I tested it right after I got it by charging up the battery and turning on everything and setting it on the back deck to run all day.  I turned it off before going to bed at about the 9 hour mark.  It may have gone a bit longer, not sure?  I just make sure I have several charged 12v brick batteries on hand for multi day trips.

I modified the initial thread with the battery info right after posting. Looks like it didn't update it. The unit operates from 10 to 15 volts with a 10Ah draw.  I have multiple batteries, a csb 7.2Ah, Apex 35Ah, XS Power 12Ah. I'm not getting more than 7hrs. I'm actually just inquiring more about what brands people are most happy with.

To completely hijack this thread, I really wish that Lowrance would bring the old line of Eagle Cudas back. They are so simple, tell ya what ya need to know and batteries last for days.

Ok, back to the original thread about batteries.  ;D

So I have this usb charger that I got way back before they were super cheap when I was travelling overseas a lot...  I haven't looked into it yet, but there's got to be a way to tap into this new tech for better batteries than the old heavy stuff (that works) to use the new sounder tech effectively (and anything else running 12v on your boat)

The draw you mentioned above doesn't make sense.  Can you check that?  It should be listed as either a milliamp (mA) or amp (A) value.  This will help in determining what size of battery you need.

That should have read 10 watts. I don't see the amps draw and haven't heard back from them for a week.  I did have a Dragonfly 4 that had a 780mh draw. Has anyone had any experience with Nocqua Power Packs?

Given that Power=Voltage*Current
and assuming that the nominal voltage is 12V
then Current = .833Amps

Oh, I misunderstood the question.

As Spot said, the theoretical demand of the Dragonfly is 0.833 amps/hour, so 7 hours run time on the CSB 7.2aH battery is about the maximum you'd expect, but if you're only getting 7 hours of run time with the Apex 35aH battery, something else might be wrong.

On the other hand, if you're asking what brand of battery is the best and has the longest product lifespan, that's opening the question to a lot of opinions.

[And yeah, Craig, I kick myself frequently for waiting one year too long to buy a finder, because all of the Cudas were gone when I started shopping.]

The Helix 5 DI draws .615 Amps so I'd expect that you'd get about 60% of the runtime with your Dragonfly.

Time for a bigger battery...

No, I don't know anything about the Nocqua battery packs.  You might look over on NCKA where they had a big discussion on the Wilderness Systems 15aH lithium battery pack and some information about the Nocqua 10aH batteries.

Nocqua:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=77228.msg882871#msg882871

Here's another, similar, battery pack that I know even less about:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=74563.msg849658#msg849658

And the Wilderness Systems 15aH battery:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?
topic=74583.msg849598#msg849598
  and here:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=77518.0

Hope there's some help in these.
