I love my Hobie for everything except the scissor pedaling action. After racing bicycles for 15 years I figured my knees wouldn't mind, but that's not the case. Hearing Ocean Kayak was coming out with a pedal version had my hopes up, only to learn the boat is 100 lbs. It doesn't even look very hydrodynamic, which is odd for OK. They usually do well with hull shape. Still not impressed by the Native or Old Town boats due to shape and weight. But I do like the Native pedal mechanism. We need another competitor in this market!

Jackson has a new one as well. John from the kayak shed was pedaling it around at ORC.

Has anyone tried the Wilderness Systems Radar with Helix drive? I looked at one at paddlefest, but didn't demo it. They look like they should be fairly efficient, and quick in the water.

I eyeballed its lower priced brother, the Pescador Pilot. It comes with a lot of options, and looks relatively efficient. I think it really boils down to what you're comparing it to. I think the Radar, or Pilot would be equivalent in speed, or even faster than an Outback. If you are coming from a Revo with the upgraded flippers, then maybe not so much.

Do you think it would be worth it for a third party company to create a pedal drive that would drop into the hobie drive wells?

This is an interesting idea. There is probably a ridiculous patent on the way the drive locks into the hull. To be fair, that is what patents are for. It would be awesome to have a similar drafting mechanism that wilderness has where you just kick the plate and the whole thing pops up.
