Hello anglers,

Just wondering if anyone has heard when the chum derby or get togethers are gonna be around hoodcanal or south sound in general.  I have seen a lot of older videos on YouTube of kayakers getting together for some good fights.

Just saw a notice on FB that its cancelled this year. No context given for why.

BUT - we'll be out there the last weekend of October and first weekend of November (at the least) with a group of yak anglers.

Come join the fun!

Ahhhh thats a bummer.  Has anyone started catching early ones yet?  I might give it a go next weekend too. I definitly will like to join some folks and learn some faces the weekend of 29th. Granted the wife lets me haha. I have to go to ohio for a week that following week.  And depending on if my hunting buddy comes through or not may be elk hunting the weekends of November. Tbd. But I will definitly follow up and see yall hopefully on the water.

I caught one incidentally last weekend in MA10 trolling 100' on the wire in 600' off Magnolia/West Point - big, feisty and all colored up. But that's the first time i've ever caught on the the salt like that, and Hoodsport hatchery only shows 4 returned yet. Any day now, though!

Quick question what depth do you guys usually fish there in Hoodsport area? Just wondering how much line I need on my anchor

Deepest you’ll anchor is maybe 15 feet. It’s all a shallow game.

As DWB said, the fish are returning to a shallow stream entrance and most anchor right near shore in at most, 15 feet of water.  The bottom is gravel/rocky and wind can cause anchor drag.  A concrete block and buoy work.  There will be no question of where to fish, just get in line.  Nice to have a buoy and quick-tie-release as most fish will take you on a ride among the other boats.  Kind of like having a halibut in  10 feet of water. You can paddle back and hope no one tied up to your buoy.

It's "kind of" flipping jigs, foul hooked fish should be released. Jigs like this can be quickly snell-tied and pink seems to work well, but...watch your fingers...

I tried smoking one but by the time they get to the creek you'll know why they're sometimes referred to as "dog" salmon.  The eggs and carcass did make excellent crab bait.  You have a less chance of "catching", but a better chance of a usable fish trolling out just a bit.  If you've never had a fish over which you had NO control, at all, for a good while, it can be pretty exciting.  A jaw grabbing tool is nice.

At the bottom of the map you'll see the notation for the Grocery store, it's right across the street and just a little south of the hatchery.  You'll see the pier or you can launch from shore.
