You can't go wrong with an Ugly Stik.  I used an 8'6" MH Ugly Stik (10#-20# test) to toss 3 ounce weights from the beach when surf fishing and it had no difficulty casting that much weight.  It's in their salmon/steelhead line.

From earlier threads, I believe most folks like a shorter rod for jigging - 6'6" was about average.

Anyway, a rod rated for 10#-20# test should be about right, whatever brand.  But you could go lighter, still.

I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

I like a good 7 to 7'6" MH ugly stick for that application.

one of these days am going to rig up a kiddie pole. the rod am looking for has to be spinning rod. able to handle 1 to 2 oz. even 1/2 oz. up to 4 oz. short around 7'. line test is 15lb test.  all am seeing is lure weights of 3/8 to 1/2 oz. type stuff. should that be ignored? but,
am eyeballing a trevala tvs70ml   opinions?

I misunderstood what you were looking for.  I thought you were looking for a light spinning rod.  Sorry about that.

Cabelas, Fishermans Marine, Sportsmans Warehouse  all carry saltwater spinners in the line/ weight class your re looking for, some at bargain prices, some quite spendy.
From experience,  Ugly Sticks up to 9 feet can usually handle the lure weights, but look for a 1 piece rod instead of a 2 piece. I used one 5 years ago in coastal South Carolina to go after cobia, reds, ground fish and even took it off shore a bit throwing2 to 5 ounces with ease
Penn, Okuma, St, Croix,Fenwick all sell saltwater spinners but they can start going up quickly in cost.

I would suggest the Trevala Light instead of the ML.  Awesome rod from 1 to 4 oz.  I have both, and the ML is my everyday ling stick for 3 to 6 oz.

i did not see that light til looking now. mmmm looks perfect. thanks onefish. recommend a reel for it? i have a new pflueger president with 15lb mono was going to use with 1/2 to2 oz. baits. possibly a little lighter possibly a little heavier but no more than 4 oz. last couple times out i got into some finning fish and was wishing i had something lighter, i think this might be it. anything less than 1 oz. and i have a hell time with bird nests with baitcasters hence? the spinning reel/rod setup.

The President isn't a saltwater reel...  That said, I have a 6 year old President that's seen lots of saltwater (and a more than a few dunkings)  and still looks and functions just like new.

I used to carry a Tupperware container with freshwater and about a teaspoon of Salt-A-Way in the truck, dropped the reel into it when I was done fishing, and let the drive home agitate it.  Careful rinse at home and liberal use of Rem Oil did the trick.

Use the President.

I use this 1 piece ugly stick. Med/Heavy 6' ... It has done the trick for me over the years, and has seen over 1000 bottom fish in its short life. Highly recommend it.

P.S. ... Med/Heavy might sounds overkill, but its perfect for lings, and bass. I have a 6' Medium also, and its a little bit too light for my taste, but i do take it out as a spare.

I just picked up an Ugly Stik 7ft med heavy spinning rod to use as a back up to my 6ft 6in med heavy casting rod.  Almost every rod I use is an Ugly Stik except for my Lamiglass meat crane and my kiddie poles. 😁

2nd the Trevala Light - I just started using one this year and it's turning into my favorite rod for saltwater.

That said, a medium action 6'6" Ugly Stick with appropriate reel will let you play with 1-2oz. swimbait setups all day.

thanks for ALL the replies. am ordering online as fishermans don`t carry the light (TVS-70L) trevala. someday will get a better reel for it. i do have the trevala casting rods one 6`6" mh the other which is my favorite is the ml 7 foot. this light rod ought to make for a good spinning rod for the light stuff and feel for me. if not keep ur eye out for a slightly used rod for sale!
