I'm 95% to be in again. Camping at the same place on the Siletz?
Spot, maybe you'll win the first place prize Hobie....and continue to paddle just out of spite.
ORC 2014 looks pretty excellent!
Whole hog Dino style again this year? :D
Whole hog Dino style again this year? :D
Most likely not gonna make it this year. If I do, won't get there till late Friday and just gonna fish my ass off Saturday then drive back early Sunday.

Well you can always camp with me or craig. We will make a spot for you so you dont have to get a site.
Seahorse (Lori) and I will be there with some "trophies" of our own making. So looking forward to this..again.
I'll post some pictures of Seahorse's awesome woodburning soon as a teaser.

I'd imagine that registration sign-ups will be posted on the main page shortly...correct ???
And -thanks for getting this started.
Is chinook bend ready to take reservations?
I would assume like this Craig

The winner of this years ORC will not only win a brand new Hobie valued at $2000, but will also win 1 of 5 spots to join Team North America in Amsterdam. If this winner chooses to go to the "Worlds", ORC will cover $1000 of the anglers airfare to Europe.

Weird, because I gave them a call as a heads about the event a couple of weeks ago. ::)

Alright, I'm committed to this one too. If I compete in 3 tourneys I have 3x chance of winning a new kayak, right? ??? (there's some fishing logic for you)
And I'll ask the same question I ask in every tourney thread: are tandems allowed? (Assuming 2x entry fees and each person obeys the rules, etc.)

The winner a few years ago, BlueWRX IIRC won the ORC with his tandem and a buddy aboard.
Usually the deal is you have to hook and net it yourself. I've also seen something like "power yourself to and from the launch" and my wife pedals sometimes, but I do most of the work as her hip starts aching after about 20 minutes. Prior to her hip stuff we always used separate boats, and she still outfished me.

Tandems were allowed last year, waterman fished out of one with a buddy, so I'm sure it will be the same rules this year.Tandems are allowed. Both anglers need to be paid up separately and both need to fish and power the kayak together. No free rides. You both must participate.

I think the primary concern here was going the other direction >:D
Paid up!!!
BTW, any plans to do like last year and have a running list of those who are confirmed as paid up on the first post?
Going to try and make this one
;D

Maybe we could get permission to hog the parking area by the playground just for the day (no trailers).Even better
Also, the back row of parking spaces behind the Shell station, as well as the parking lot in front of the Neighborhood for Kids (which we have donated funds to in the past).
Anyone have a golf cart handy to tow wheeled kayaks and crew up to/from the upper lots??

****************IMPORTANT UPDATE********************
This year we are needing to manage the tournament roster differently for the ORC.
The roster for the 2014 ORC will be limited to 120 competitors.
I registered too. No reason to take a chance missing out! Now, I have to register for the AOTD in Coos Bay...
Fred "True" Trujillo
Arrrrggghhh!!! Yes! The Rockfish Classic! Not the AOTY. D'oh! Can you switch it over or refund and I'll hit all the right buttons?
No wife jokes, please.

Nope.
Refer to the bottom of post. # 79, as it says nobody will be posting a roster of paid up competitors.

Might be nice to get a PM or something so those think they're registered get confirmation, even if that isn't published publically.
I always thought is weird to post up registrants names on a public site. Perhaps just post up the total numbers registered? And at least make sure confirmation emails are sent/received.I agree. If you want to know if your buddies entered, pm them. Also, it is a lot of work putting this together and that is just another task that would take away from us finding more captain's bag goodies.
-Allen
I got an email receipt. It was in my junk mail, or spam folder. FWIW I use Gmail. I would check your spam and junk mail folders.
Shotgun!Agreed.............
Fred "True" Trujillo
My PayPal account shows that the transaction was completed, so that is what I will go with.
I'm in! Man, that launch will certainly be a zoo if we have 120 participants!
Let's not make any more work for the volunteers putting ORC together. It's a tremendous amount of work already if they don't have time to add a list respect that and move on.I always thought is weird to post up registrants names on a public site. Sharkbait,
I was just about to do the same thing--ya beat me to it.
I like the idea of "knowing".
Got room for one more?
Got room for one more?Seriously?!!! That will be awesome. Let me know if you want to borrow any gear, I seem to remember your favorite salmon rod being donated to the willamette after one too many donuts ;)

Anyone know what the one day license cost? and the invasive species. Coming from California and need to get that setup...
Anyone know what the one day license cost? and the invasive species. Coming from California and need to get that setup...
One day license is $16.75
Two day is $31.50
Invasive permit is $7.00
All resident/non-resident...day licensing also includes salmon/steelhead/halibut tag
Licensing can be done online through ODFW...
However, I highly recommend stopping in somewhere on your way up and getting it...
My faith in the ODFW online stuff is, well, minimal at best...
If you've never had a license in Oregon before, you'll need your California driver's license (all your info is on it)...
I set guys up all the time from California...just takes a couple minutes
Chinook Bend, the campground most of us will be staying at, and the location of the prize ceremony and taco feed on that Saturday, is a license dealer and is able to hook you up with all of the required papers.

Just out of curiosity....You had better drag Rudy down here with you!
Is there still room?
And, anyone know of an extra kayak if someone from AK were to come down for this?
Thankya sir!
Just out of curiosity....For any Alaska resident's(or anyone traveling long distances) that are considering coming to ORC , I have a few extra Hobie kayaks available to rent. Please send me a PM and I well get you set up. The first 4 can rent KFO's guide kayaks/boats that include electronics, Turbo fins etc

- Is the weigh-in at the dock in Depoe Bay or at Chinook Bend? It's a significant question since it looks like CB is 45 minutes from Depoe Bay, and obviously people don't want to miss the check-in.
Weigh-in will be at the launch in Depoe Bay. I updated the original post. Thanks for asking this!
- For people not staying at CB, can we hose off our yaks there after the tourney before we head back to where we're staying?
Yes, there are spigots at many of the campsites and you shouldn't have a problem with finding someone to let you use one. If I have one at my site you can use it.
- What are the times/locations for the various meetings, such as the Captain's Meeting, and the Coast Guard safety check?
We'll do an evening meeting on Friday. I imagine it will start sometime between 6pm and 8pm. You'll need to show up and ask people like myself or call someone who you know at the campground.
- Is there a check-in on the morning-of, and if so where is it?
Check-in stuff is best handled the evening before at the campground, but there should be someone there in the morning accepting registrations and waivers for people showing up that morning. Details on this one are fuzzy at this point.
NOTE: DO NOT FOLLOW GOOGLE MAP'S DIRECTIONS TO CHINOOK BEND CAMPGROUND!!!Glad we got that figured out ;D
If you use Google Maps and you search for Chinook Bend campground it will not take you to the correct place. This is what led me to believe that it was 45 minutes between Depoe Bay and the campground.
I don't want to muddy the waters, but when I punch "2920 Siletz Hwy Lincoln City, OR 97367" into Google Maps, I get sent way down Hwy 229 past where I understand the campground is. (A couple of us including guys who'd been before just had a FB discussion about this.)
Going down Silitz Hwy and stopping at the place that says "Chinook Bend" seems to work really well. It worked for me the last couple years, so I'm hoping that method is still sound.

I knock on wood as I post this: http://magicseaweed.com/Lincoln-City-Surf-Report/316/
7 feet at 9 seconds. Hopefully, July 12 will be much better that the Father's Day weekend option which was considered. It was a close vote.

Looking like a good call at this point! The crazy wind can't last another month...Can it?
The worst conditions I ever fished in were at Roy's tournament 2 years ago. 10 foot swells and 25 mph gusts. Not that I want to do that again, but just saying!

Does one need to be a Hobie Team member to go to Amasterdam if they win this tourney?Nope :) you going to join us?
For others that do not have a radio....it's ok to leave the harbor with a group. On the radio, " 7 kayaks leaving Depoe Bay" or something like that.I have gps on the iPhone as well as access to a hand held gps just thinking if I should register now or wait and hope there's an opening I also may just by one if I can find a quality one at a respectable price.
However.......if it's real foggy and you get lost or confused about your location ---Having a radio with GPS could save you a lot of embarrassment or your life.
Main Point ---- you do not have to have a radio for ORC.

So is the Barbie Pole competition on this year? Can I load the ironman pole with heavier line?
Being the "Hobie Qualifier"...and a bunch of guys (I'm assuming here) wanting to be really serious about the competition, I'm just curious if "Barbies" are gonna fish this year...
I wouldn't mind seeing Amsterdam again, but I'm also in for a little Barbie fishing.
Anybody?

Oh, and for what it is worth, the Coast Guard Auxiliary is looking forward to having us again, and advised they will come out to Chinook Bend Campground both Thursday and Friday nights to do vessel inspections. They want to impact us as little as possible at the ramp. I had them do mine yesterday while I was rigging up, so I wouldn't have to do it at the ORC.
If you want to succeed with the inspection, here is a fun game you can play. I haven't done so, but I assume it would be an action packed first person shooter. http://vdept.cgaux.org/vve/launch.htm
Or, just have a safety flag, whistle, radio, compass/gps, sunscreen, drinking water, immersion gear, pfd, and a white light (head lamp). A cell phone may be extra credit, but I am not sure.
So what time can we launch, who will have the waiver for me to sign the morning of (or can someone mail me one there's still time , pm me ) can any coast guard give me an inspection Like a week or two before hand if that works?
Yep rolling in in the am. Who would have the waivers for me to pm. Not sure if there's an earliest allowed time to launch. Obviously if it's still dark it would be poor judegement to shoot the hole.
If you'll be staying at the campground the night before there'll be waivers availble there. The CG will also send people to the campground that Friday evening too for inspections. If you'll just roll into Depoe Bay that Saturday morning then you would be well advised to get the CG to do your inspection before hand. Otherwise you might be waiting around for a while unable to hit the water. I know they've said there'll be some waivers available that morning at the launch too.

Time for me to make my annual offer ...
Are you new to the salt? Feel like a little company on the water? I'm willing to take 2 newbies out. Note: this is NOT a guided trip. This isn't a 3 hour tour of my honey holes, because I've fished Depoe Bay exactly 3 times (the past 3 ORC's). I'd just like to help a couple people out on their journey to becoming salt water kayak fishermen. Must have all your own gear including proper immersion wear and a VHF radio.

Nice offer, Allen! Thanks for doing this for the newbies. Wish I could take advantage of it, but alas, I'm still too newb/chicken for the salt for depoe bay...maybe next year.I was thinking the same thing then my wife told me I could sign up for the ORC not a second thought I'm in then it was depoe bay Thursday , that little channel in them big rocks is intimidating in a yak even though I have chartered out of there. But once you clear the channel it's exhilarating to look out to sea and keep paddling. You may want to just paddle out and around a little then back in to get your appetite for it wet, I can't wait to go back out.Time for me to make my annual offer ...

Allen,
My name is Mike. I would like to take you up on your generous offer if it still stands. I have no experience kayak fishing in the salt.I am really stoked for my first ORC. I kayak fish about every week. I fish alot in the Columbia River. I have been charter fishing out of Depoe Bay, but never in a kayak. I will have my kayak, all required safety gear and tackle.
Mike
Here is a map of the bay. Be sure to avoid the "North Reef" if there is any swell. Lots of people were cutting across it last year(including myself) it goes from about 70 feet deep to about 10 feet deep really fast and waves were breaking over it occasionally. I also heard power boaters come on the radio a few times warning kayakers to stay away from there. I was surprised no one mentioned it last year. Hopefully the swell is small enough that we done have to worry about it. :)
NOAA maps aren't giving me any help on the boundries for the big day can someone please post a usable map?
[/quote
Take a look at last years thread . Lots of good maps. Then do your homework.
Got my reservation in at Chinook Bend for Wednesday through Saturday night. Shaun told me it was 20% off of the regular rate for tenting and RVing and that it was Kosher to let you all know that. Group tent area will be $20 instead of $25. I'm not sure what the RVing rate is...
I'll be going solo without the family. Anyone that wants to head out of Depoe Bay on Thursday and/or Friday morning to scout, let me know. I'll be checking out a few areas and dropping a crab trap.
Fred "True" Trujillo
I gots me a pointy kage. I'm not above eating squid tacos. Who's up for pokin' some squid? C'mon! I know my Hawaiian family would be all over that! Heh, heh, heh...Never fished for 'em, but would be willing to give it a try. Do you use squid jigs?
Fred "True" Trujillo
Uh, unfortunately, I don't have a squid jig that would catch a 6' Humboldt Squid... I watched 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea several times though, so I think I'm ready.
Fred "True" Trujillo
...even though the swell report right now looks...well...gnarly...I noticed the wind starts to pick up mid to end of the week......hopefully it gets better as we get closer
Oh well...GAME ON!!
Was there an online copy of the waiver so we can have it filled out before Friday?I got a pm confermation there working on it :-\

So, will we need the registration verification email from Next Adventure on game day?
Or will there be a list of signed up participants?
I ask simply because I went to print my verification email... ...Yeah, it's gone... ???
Because I get tired of everyone saying "go look at previous years' threads..." (seriously? They're like 30 pages long!), I'm posting last year's boundary map for anyone who is curious:I for one thank you cuz I use an iPhone and it's a bear to read threw a bunch of threads.

I could have sworn I posted the boundaries on here but I guess not. I know it's on the ORC Facebook page and the Coast Guard has it, but here it is:I was out there with Salemite and did not see one single yellow tack floating in the water did he paint it a different color ?

i don`t suppose someone in the know could say how many are signed up now?
Im not trying to jinx us but is the backup plan out if newport this year?
Who is showing up early for prefishing? Ill be there wed. Afternoon.
Looks like we can keep unclipped chinook "bycatch" at ORC if I'm reading the regs correctly. Not that I've ever had one hit a Lancer Jig. ;-)

Well well well.. look what the cat dragged in. This guy :hello:
Looking forward to seeing the gang this weekend.
Was supposed to work, but I'm suddenly not feeling too well... ;)
No Ninkasi until you sign in. Also, I am glad to see snoodleboob smoochy bear will be there. I haven't seen him forever.

Hi 597 di
Sane connector but different transducer. Happen to have the ducer? I can mount it!
I just wanted to throw a HUGE SHOUT OUT to everybody here on NWKA.......
Saturday will mark a year that I have been kayak fishing....never had did it before nor really heard of it until I met browneyesvictim (Erik)... I was invited to ORC 2013 with no intention of fishing the tourney......that changed...Thanks Erik :-*....Did not catch any fish but was immediately hooked to the sport even after almost getting rolled coming back in. Everybody was very welcoming and friendly, it was like a huge family. I tied flies for the first time ever and found that I was a natural, hence the name FlyGuy.
I went from using Dana's outback, Erik's beat up ugly stick, a pair of waders, dry top and a $5 pair of walmart water shoes last year to being fully equipted with two yaks with all the gear and I couldn't have done without the help and support from everybody on NWKA especially the ones that took me under their wings (you guys know who are). I still have alot to learn and look forward to gaining more knowledge from all of you.

Last Sunday I caught some sort of bug...been running a massive fever all week with flu-ish like symptoms...
So count me out...
I guess I shoulda stayed up to date on this. Wasn't sure until today if I'd be able to make it, didn't realize registration closed at 3! Any chance of an exception?Maybe you can take Sharkbait's spot if he bought one and wants to sell it.

Done. How do I make the donation Mark?
Inquiring minds want to know ... how close did we get to 120?

I'd like to see it more like aoty mutiple speices with points per inch. If you wanted to you could do a catch and release with pictures and bonus points for cnr.

+1 sumpNZ has a very valid point here.....2013 ORC was my very first time kayak fishing ever....I have been hooked, making both AOTD and ORC since then. AOTD is a huge challenge for newbs but ORC is anybody's game newb or old salt. Personally its really not about winning, its about the people.....although I did win the lightest fish :DYes there is but that doesn't mean another tournament can't use the same criteria. There's already a contest like that ;)Any chance of changing the format to something different that largest only?

I'll just toss into this what I have in the past. ORC, as I understand it, has always had as at least some of its purpose the role of giving newbies (to kayaking, fishing in general, doing so in the salt, etc) a large group to have that experience with in safety, while maintaining the excitement of possibly actually winning a prize. Until 2013, IIRC, ORC was always won by a first timer at the tournament, and often that person was also a kayak or at least salt water newbie. Heck, my first time out I came in 5th.
Single heaviest fish gives the newbies a legitimate shot at winning and thereby adds excitment to help keep them hooked on the sport. AOTD requires more skill, so I totally get why the advocates of that style want it. But if you're still trying to figure out the whole fishing from a kayak in the open ocean thing it would seem overwhelming to a lot of people to also have to try to chase down 4 (at least) species of fish, and try to get good examples of each. I'm not sure that as a newbie I'd have wanted to drive 6-7 hours and spend $40 to enter a fishing contest with a group that formatted that tournament in such a way that I knew I had no chance of winning any prize. But for the single heaviest format I knew I just needed to luck into 1 decent fish, so that did draw me to do that drive and spend that entry fee. Not to mention get involved in the taco feed as heavily as I have.
My opinion only: I have no problem with AOTD styles, but I'd much rather see that as a seperate event from ORC. Make that the Sunday after ORC, or the Friday before, or (most likely) on a totally different weekend. Yeah, especially if it was a different weekend you'd have folks that can't make both. That's the case anyway when it comes to fishing tournaments. If I could only make one, I'd probably do the single heaviest fish format. If I could spare the time for both, I'd do both.
Winning the largest kayak tournament in the NW should mean something more than you showed up and got lucky.
I'm going to have to disagree with you here .... the format/location has been changed several times.
Winning the largest kayak tournament in the NW should mean something more than you showed up and got lucky.
I will just point out that in its current format is how it became the largest kayak tournament in the NW. Change the format and might not be the biggest for very much longer.
IMHO - if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'm completely on board to revamp things a little because of it's size. As of this year it became a Hobie qualifier even! If this continues to be as big as it is or bigger, it needs to be a fishermen's tourney, not a lucky lotto drop. I watched a guy boat a 25" black this year. It's hardly a "Rockfish Classic" when that beast can't compete against even mediocre cabs. If it stays single heaviest fish, than it should be revamped to only target/allow ling and cab to compete. Otherwise we should change the scoring to allow a 20" greening to best a 33" ling.

It has become the largest through its longevity, organization and reputation of being a fun even to be a part of.
It is a $40 kayak tournament with free beer. I don't think the underlying reason most people show up is to win. It is to have fun and get out on the water.
Saying you won ORC should be a big deal.
It became the largest tournament in the PNW last year for one main reason: It was a hobie world's qualifier. The reasons for the organic growth prior to that were the enthusiasm of a select few as far as I can tell, Jammer in particular.

I humbly disagree. It's always been the largest tournament in the PNW. Making it a hobby world qualifier only served to draw in out of staters to the event.

I went to 2013 and 2014, and it was at least 150% difference. Like 80 vs 120. So it may be that you are correct as I havent been to any other tournament in NWKA territory, if NWKA territory = PNW, that ORC has always been the largest. For a point of comparison though, just south in Humboldt County CA we have Gimme Shelter, which has had ~200 anglers in each of the last two years. Like ORC, GS's main popularity comes from the enthusiasm of the prior competitiors and that of the organizers. That said, if you made GS a hobie world qualifier I think it would easily go over 300 anglers if Eric allowed it. Of course I could be wrong, but I don't think so. ORC was the size it was in 2014 because it was a hobie world qualifier.

ORC has grown at a 50-100% growth year on year since its inception. While I think the Hobie thing did pull a few more competitors in, in all honesty, it was really down played, and I think maybe it added 10 participants.

Use of Barbie (kiddie) poles ONLY! :headbang:I think that's a whole other tournament too.[emoji12]
IMO that doesn't change much. The 10# 25" cab still takes a higher overall rating over a 25" rockfish or 20" greenling. Your essentially giving consolation prizes for catching a bigger fish that just doesn't weigh as much because of it's flavor. An 8# rockfish is a far more impressive fish than a 10# cab.

Interestingly, under AOTY points, the 25" cab and 25" rockfish would have the same score. Both are 8 points per inch.
Damn...You spoiled my argument! :P That's a scoring flaw I overlooked
I have seen far more 40" lings caught in WA from a kayak than I have in AK. You just have to put in the time.Damn...You spoiled my argument! [emoji14] That's a scoring flaw I overlooked
I could be wrong, but I think the points are set up the way they are in part due to the particularly large examples available to the Alaska contingent (and travellers to AK). You can retain some pretty big rockfish up there, including Canary and Yellow Eye. Same reason lings are only 5 points per inch. Several 40"+ lings have been caught by members up there.
Oh, and there was chatter a few years ago regarding ditching the Potluck in favor of catered BBQ or something along those lines.
Figured out a way to pay for the BBQ.
ORC general fund to foot the bill up front for catered BBQ and all the hardware needed.
When you register for the ORC, you also have the option to prepay for ticket(s) to eat. The actual cost could be say somewhere like $8-$12 per person (kids under 16 eat free). Tickets also are sold during ORC, right up till the BBQ runs out of food, or it is time to shut down. If you don't provide a ticket, you fend for yourself.
All ticket sales go back to the ORC general fund.
Now, to keep it easy... When you prepay for ticket(s) you would get a confirmation number and added to a master list (held by whomever is taking in the ORC funds). During ORC, you check in with the ticket sales person (booth) and they verify you have prepaid and they hand you your tickets.

It was the largest tournament before it became a Hobie Worlds qualifier. That just pushed the numbers even higher.I agree with both these points. Sending a newb to the Hobie World Qualifier doesn't make much sense to me. I also sometimes wonder how many folks caught their winning fish in the deep hole in the channel.
I completely agree if the winner is going to represent the PNW there should be some skill invloved.
Additionally I would love to see an official power boat helping to organize things during fishing hours. With the size this is growing into I would hate to have a run in with a power boat and kayakers who may have drifted into the cannel.
when a "pro" wins and then just sells the kayak... I don't even begin to have any ideas to address that issue.I don't mind a newb winning a kayak. I enjoy that more than a well established contestant winning one & selling it. That happens a lot in those other big contests. They're still fun though.
One possible way to tweak the tournament without breaking it would be to assign the Grand Prize to the largest fish of the day but award the 2nd, 3rd etc prizes for the largest fish of each of the other species.
With this format, the salt newb would still have the same chance at 1st place overall but they'd also have a shot at 1st place for other species. If you don't cap people at one prize, one person could sweep all the species, which could be good or could be bad depending on your perspective.
To seperate the men from the boys, you could award Trophies for 1st thru Xth based on total species value but award prizes based on size/species. That still keeps the newbs in the running for 1st place but gives the seasoned guys a more advanced target (Hobby World Tournament entry for example).

We like volunteers. Some of us like fresh ideas as well. I think it should be total weight of 3 fish. Your largest cabbie, lingcod, and BRF. If you can't catch all three, you most likely won't be in the top ten. Imagine the drama unfolding in someone's mind as they are staring at their freshly caught 23 inch cabezon trying to decide if he/she should keep it knowing it is the only one they can keep for the day. I like it...I kinda feel like I read something similar recently [emoji6]
Plus, that gives a guy/gal an out if they don't place. They can come up with a great fish tale about how they caught a 26 inch cabbie right off the bat, but being the stud fisherperson they are, they thought they could do better, so they released it. If only they would have kept it they would have won. Honest...

I kind of like this idea. However, if you go there I think outlawing live-wells should be part of the rules (or at least any that are large enough to hold a >18" fish - that way people can still live bait with greenling if they want). Make you decide to keep or release right then and there, not hold onto it and only release it if you get an upgrade.

Live-wells? People were just stringing them up and then releasing them later when they caught bigger ones. And yes, I'm judging (that is unethical based on Oregon state fishing regulations).

Very disappointing. I had no idea this was going on.
There should be something in the rules about immediately killing any fish you put on a clip or stringer. I think high grading sends the wrong message in a contest where many eyes are on us and we want to show good stewardship of the resource. Barotrauma and floaters need to be avoided.
Just to be clear I don't have a problem with imediately releasing a small fish in hope of catching a larger one.

It's illegal, plain and simple. The rules do state that all Oregon DFW rules must be followed.
Who was doing it? I kind of like the power of public ridicule.
