Spent the week after the 4th in Minnesota at my annual family reunion that’s currently on its 43rd year. Lake Ida near Alexandria, MN was the setting and the weather was about as good as we could have asked for. That gave us plenty of opportunities for early morning top-water fishing for LM bass and northern pike. We also were able to make it out during the day plenty of times to fish some of the reefs and weed lines out in the middle of the lake. The lake is full of LM bass in the 11” to 14” range so we kept plenty of those for fish fry’s and anything bigger than 15” was CPR’d. The largest LMB that was caught for the week was just shy of 18”. There were some nice SM bass that were caught, the largest was caught by my 9-year-old cousin and that ended up being 18”. There were tons of smaller northern pike also, the largest caught was 24” by my uncle while fishing top water in the morning. Finally, this lake has a lot of very aggressive rockbass in the 10” range. They were hitting our large spinners and top water lures in the mornings. I didn’t think to get any pics of them though.

My brother catching a nice lmb w/ a side salad

“The Meat Hole” seemingly endless amount of smaller lmb. Lots of dogfish.

My bro with his personal best bass for the trip

This little guy bit off a little more than he could chew, hitting a large top-water spinner about his own size.

Northern pike

My largest bass of the trip, bending the crap out of my spinner.

Some of the docks near our resort

Nice view of the lake.

Now, a little under the surface action…

Chillin under the lilly pads!

Cool underwater pics, man.  That pike shot is sick!  It's always kinda fun to grab a snorkle and fins in freshwater.  I've seen lots of cool stuff that way, including an epic troud vs. crayfish duel in Detroit Res.  Rad!

Yep, only had enough room in the bag for my mask & snorkel. Wish I could've brought my fins too. Gotta love that warm lake water. It really helps to scout out the docks that way. Provides a great way to get an idea of which ones are more likely to hold fish under them in the mornings. Also to check out weed lines, etc.
