Here's some video from a 50 lb halibut earlier this month. I was pretty freaked out for a second when this thing jumped at me after the harpoon shot, as you can tell by the look on my face. I actually thought it was going to land in the gear well behind me!

Cheers!

Wheee, doggies !

So....what happens next ? Where do you put that beast for the trip back ? Seems like the real work is about to start.

Also, how far out is this ?

Next? Throw it behind me and go fish for ling's and rockfish. ;D A halibut up to, and probably a bit over 80 lbs can fit nicely in that gear well. The larger ones may require a little assistance to get stowed. Or just stow the mirage drive behind me, throw the fish in under my legs and paddle back to the beach. This fish was around 3 miles out.

I like the "If you want in, I'll get out" move after the first jump.

Just got the notice in email: they'll close the Columbia Zone Halibut season at midnight tonight.
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

Were you using a knife on a stick to knock off the halibut after you harpooned it?  Where do you stick it?

I was using the knife on the stick to stab the gills and get the blood pumping out of the fish.  The harpoon shot for this fish went right behind the collar on the non-belly side (shoulder).
