Title: 6th annual Sunset Bay Angler Of The Day Kayak Fishing Challenge announcement
Post by: coosbayyaker on July 07, 2015, 12:31:37 AM
Yes, I'm still alive, and yes I am still having the Sunset Bay Angler Of The Day Kayak Fishing Challenge!

This year will be a throw back to the early days since I didn't get off my ass soon enough and gather as many sponsors as before. A full time plus job really puts a damper on things like fishing, or planning a fishing tournament... The top spots will still pay pretty good!

So join us on August 22nd, 2015 at Sunset Bay in Coos Bay, OR for the 6th installment of the Sunset Bay AOTD tourny. There will be prizes, money, food and most importantly, a lot of fun!

You can sign up the morning of the tourny at the launch or come by my house on Friday evening and do it. If you want to send a personal payment to my paypal, that is ok too. My paypal is r.marcum@charter.net

For anyone that hasn't ever been, Sunset Bay is a newbie friendly launch...Well usually, except when I have my tourny... ;) But seriously this is a great area for newbies and old salts alike, so if your new or never been on the big blue, you should really check it out!

I am excited this year because Dana "yaksurf" has graciously offered to help do the dirty work so I can actually fish it this year..Stoked!

Check out the facebook page for more info also.

https://www.facebook.com/sunsetbayangleroftheday

Hope to see a bunch of you there!

Damn.  School finishes for the summer quarter on the 20th, then on the 24th I have to be out in DFW for a couple weeks (which probably means flying on the 23rd).  Pretty sure SWMBO would not take kindly to me splitting for a fishing tournament on the 22nd.

Awesome!  It will be good to see you again.   Are you going to be chasing salmon before the tournament?  I'll take you out if you are going to and tie some of my rigs for you.

The picture in my head of that day was Dana quartered across the face of at least an 8' swell, looking like it was nothing. On the other hand, since I could, unike Dana, see it coming, I was getting some very wide eyes...

Awesome, So everyone knows, the Black Berry Arts Festival is that weekend  so the non fishing family members can have something fun to do.

Just curious where did you get a camping spot?

Here are links to the three parks close to Sunset Bay. I have no idea if there are spots available, but I figured there would be no spots available at Sunset Bay campground but I searched Reserve America and there was 3 tent sites available, I would jump on those quick if you want to get one. The second link is Sunset.

It does say on the FB page but after checking it out, it is kinda hard to find. It is on the "about" and the "long description". I will put a post up that explains it on front page.

But it is a points per inch contest like the AOTY. Some of the points are not the same but same idea. Points per inch for the species that can be caught out at Sunset Bay which are mainly going to be rockfish, Greenling, Cabezon, Lingcod and Perch. Most points wins!

Only 13 days to go!

things are coming together for the tourney, got most of the prize donations. Don't forget the first 40 people will be guaranteed a captains bag with some goodies so if you want to be assured of getting one, pay early with paypal. my paypal is r.marcum@charter.net. make sure you make it a personal payment, not for goods and services.

We will have a captains meeting at my house at 6:30 pm on friday, show up a little earlier so we can get you registered and waivered. If you don't know how to get there you can hook up with someone at the campground you are at that has or message me and i will tell you. Carpool if possible to make parking easier.

If you can't make the captains meeting just show up at the launch the morning of the tournament and we will get you registered. I will also do a drive through the different parks earlier on Friday to say hi to people and do some registering.

Unfortunately i cannot have the after party at my house like in years past, i have to leave at 5:30 Sunday morning to drive to Washington  :(

Looking forward to another great tourney this year and don't forget to bring some extra dough to buy a bunch of tickets for the drawing to benefit Heroes on the Water, we will have a real nice package or two for that drawing!

See ya all there.

How the heck is this possible?  Has there even been any rain down there in the past month?

Quote
Increased pathogen and fecal bacteria levels in ocean waters can come from shore and inland sources, such as stormwater runoff, sewer overflows, failing septic systems, and animal waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.

The rest sound like a failure on the Cooz Bay department of poop'n flow's part somehow.

I don't know, but it appears to come and go down there.  Just saw they had a similar advisory early in June - posted by Ling Banger...

Maybe animal waste from wildlife - you guys have already scared the crap out of all of the big lings/cabs that are going to be caught during the tournament next weekend!    :dontknow:

Yeah these seem to happen pretty frequently; I don't know how serious they are. I'd guess it will be clear by the time we're down there. Anyone from the Coos Collective want to weigh in? I mean I'm coming either way, so whatever. What's a drysuit for if not to keep off fecal bacteria?  >:D

This advisory comes up a couple of days after every trip I make, I'm almost certain. I want to state for the record that I have never done a #2 while kayak fishing. It wasn't me!

It's pretty obvious when the levels are high, you'll come back to the beach and there's a dark greenish tint to the water. It should clear up before the tourney, but I feel like we won't have to worry about that if conditions end up as predicted.

It has nothing to do with the parks or golf course waste sewer treatment( theirs is a contained dry land plant). 98% of the matter is marine mammal poop. Mostly sea lions, sea birds, seals and the way the currents work in there. A guy did a study of the currents a few years ago with oranges that had satellite gps attach to them. he trak them for a month and found that they took about 4 to 5 days to leave the inner bay and get to the outer part of Sunset which there it took a couple more days for them to get to the open ocean. Even then some got carried back in and they started the process all over, eventually they all made it to the open ocean.

quick update:

First off, excuse my language but FUCK me running! Shitty conditions again?!?!

We will have a back up plan of trolling for Salmon on the Coos. I will monitor conditions and make a decision on Tuesday. Plan to pack gear for salmon just in case. It will be a real pain in the ass if we have to go to plan B!

Got a lot of nice prizes that will be awarded no matter what happens so please still show up. We will have a good time and raise a bunch of money for Heroes on the Water!

On the poop water, it will be cleared up by the tourney and doesn't affect where we fish any way, unless the swell is ten feet and we can't get out of the bay...

8 days to go!

Roy, I voted no and I use a motor, but I just pay then fish tournys but I disqualify myself before going out. I'm still allowed then to spend a day fishing and enjoy the company without having an advantage and the motor is an advantage. I could not fish near as far or as long without it. But the contest part of the tournament should be kept nonmotorized as is to keep thecontest portion even. I can still eat and partake of drawings and most of all still contribute. Art

Amongst this group of handicaps? That's like allowing electric wheelchairs at the Special Olympics!
I voted no!

On a serious note... I would genuinely welcome any and all if they can meet the qualification requirements and rules. I would question the safety of an individual that would need a motor assisted kayak as I doubt they can self-rescue anyway.

I  can self rescue and insure that by doing it several times a year. When I cant do it withbgear on I will quit the kayak fishing and sit on the beach. Motor only insures that Ican get tothe beach, without calling the CG cuz I'm wore out. No wheelchair. Art

I could be wrong, but I don't think Simpsons is going to be doable this year, even with motorized assist. Most of us would feel privileged to fish with you anyway.

The long range range forecast actually looks a little better then it did a couple days ago!!! but in case we do have to switch to plan B...

A quick rundown of what the plan B would entail. It will have to be pretty bad to go to plan B because it will be a real PITA if we have to switch to Trolling for Salmon. Like I said before I will monitor the conditions and make a decision on Tuesday night or Wednesday, I don't want to make a decision too soon.

Anyway, if we do switch to plan B the launch will  be at the BLM boat ramp on the north spit 3 miles down trans pacific hwy(first left after big green bridge going north). There is a large parking area with some room to have the festivities. There is no launch fee.

High tide is at about 7:15 am at the bridges and if we launch at 5:30 it should give plenty of time troll for a few hours at least. Also the tide exchange is very low so you should be able to troll back and forth at the chip pile or between the bridges.

The preferred method of fishing is trolling with a slider or spreader with a dropper weight in the 4-6 oz. range followed by a flasher with a 3-4 foot mooching rig with plug cut herring.

The scoring would switch to single heaviest fish. The legal  limit is two fish, wild or fin clipped Chinook or only fin clipped Coho which you probably wont catch at this time, but you never know.

Again, I really hope we don't have to do plan B but pack some gear for it just in case.

Post by: Ling ling, Herro? on August 17, 2015, 04:27:48 PM
Forgive me if I'm out of line with this one, but given the current conditions and how it's trending for the weekend, I think plan B is a better call. I think it will be safer/more enjoyable for everyone. Yeah, it will be a pain in the ass for organizing the event and moving everything to the BLM ramp, but the conditions are far better catered to fishing in the bay for salmon.

The wind will be down in the morning and the small tide swing will be in our favor.

I know people got out and had fun last year despite the terrible conditions, I know that we aren't being forced to fish the conditions either, but it seems slightly irresponsible to give the green light to fishing Sunset just for the sake of convenience.

Granted it is a little early and things MIGHT improve, I honestly think that is just wishful thinking. The reality is that it's probably not going to get any better.

I know that Roy said he would make the call Tuesday or Wednesday, and I respect his decision. It's still a little early, so I guess all I can do is wait like everyone else. I just wanted to express my thoughts on the matter.

Hell i'll probably br dragging a herring up the Coos anyway like last year cuz I'm fishing with my motor, so what ever yalldecide is fine as long  as we can all get together for the winners prizes and thedrawings and good food and a beer, it'll be fine. Art

I think Chris has some good points. I'll be happy enough either way but I might have more fun in the bay.

If we fish the bay, will the scoring be the same? I hope so. It's very doable to catch RF, lings, perch, flat fish, salmon, etc. SW of the trestles. With plan B where's the launch point/check in & what will the boundaries be? Low slack is about 11:30m looking at about a 4 foot exchange with probable north wind on the after noon incoming. Where we gonna do the potluck & awards? Definitely a pita. For what it's worth, my vote is Sunset.

Here it is again Paul, I posted it on the previous page...

Catching rockfish, perch, flatfish or a ling in the bay is doable, so why change the scoring? If the wind is blowing at Sunset it'll be blowing just as hard or harder on the North spit.

I vote to keep it at Sunset. The conditions couldn't possibly be any worse than past years, and besides, they add another element of challenge to the event. Also, I am camping at Bastendorff and don't want to have to drive back through town and north to get to the fishing spot!

Conditions were bad enough last year that you didn't stay out very long, conditions this year could very well be worse.
I don't remember what the forecast "was", but it sure turned to absolute crap last year regardless.

I'm hoping for way better conditions as I have a newbie with me and this will be his first salty experience in a kayak.
Don't want it to be his last.

That, and I'm sure your camping location is going to be a deciding factor on where the event takes place.     ::)
Seriously please leave the "Easy Button" at home.

I'm not voting in favor of either plan, as I am prepared for both.  I'm looking forward to some camping with friends and family, and fishing with the  NWKA crew.

See, that's what I'm thinking.  Even though Friday was a stellar day last year, it turned to shit in a hand bag on Saturday.
Off shore wind, awkward current, heavy fog, stupid swell/period.  And this year's forecast is showing to be a bit worse.

Hopefully with any luck it will miss the forecast and turn out to be gravy!

Perhaps a compromise could be to expand the fishing area for the tourney to include the bay and leave everything else as planned; let people fish where they want.

If you have a newb with you, I can guarantee that an experience in the bay at Sunset is going to be better than launching from the North Spit boat ramp. The North Spit launch will be for advanced fishers only in these conditions. I'll bet money on it.

It's okay with me which ever place we launch, but don't kid yourselves; North Spit isn't going to be a piece of cake if the forecast holds. Sunday looks better than Saturday. My request: let's keep the scoring the same as it would be at Sunset. More interesting than an ordinary salmon derby.

Those are ocean conditions Paul... It will be different in the bay. It takes a little longer for the wind to affect that area.

The north spit is cake especially early and with the very little tide exchange there will be on Saturday. I have fished that area for Salmon a lot and the wind will not get bad until after noon. Yes , there will probably be some wind early, but it will be manageable.

I will be making an important announcement about the tournament tomorrow afternoon, stay tuned....

Also,

Leave your firewood at home.  As of this morning at 10am, there is a state wide ban on campfires in the Oregon State Parks.

Oregon State Parks

Effective Aug. 19 at 10 a.m., a statewide ban is in place for all campfires and open flames in properties owned and managed by Oregon State Parks, as well as the ocean shores. This includes but is not limited to fire pits, tiki torches, and candles. The use of propane stoves and/or charcoal briquettes for cooking may be allowed, but are subject to local fire restrictions. Please check with park staff. This ban will remain in effect for at least one week and will be re-evaluated based on fire status, weather and guidance from state and local fire officials.

This sux, as I had my daughter and niece load up a good 3-4 hundred pounds of firewood last night into the bed of my truck.  Guess I'll be unloading it all in the morning before we leave for Sunset.

I need to get specifics from the park if I can use charcoal to cook on or not.  :-\

I called the Sunset Bay SP booth and chatted with the fine lady working there, to see about this statement:

Quote
"The use of propane stoves and/or charcoal briquettes for cooking may be allowed, but are subject to local fire restrictions."

Bottom line is that we can use both the propane and charcoal to cook from while in the actual campground area, but is not allowed out on the beach areas.

Thank goodness, as my plans were to cook my dinners over charcoal Thurs and Friday evenings.

Now, I'm not sure where that puts the potluck as far as on the beach area, or the campground area?
The deep fryers may get shut down.  Those that are bringing or plan on frying at the potluck, may want to call the Sunset State Park booth @ 541-888-8867 and select "0" and talk to the receptionist.

If you don't get through with that one, the other number I was given is 541-888-3778, but I don't remember where this one will ring up.

OK,  Drum roll please!!

Here's the deal. WE are going to do a split tourney. We will  still be doing Sunset for the points per inch tourney and the big prizes, that is where the potluck and awards ceremony will be also, same as usual. Get out early and hopefully get some fishing time in.

We are also opening up the option to Salmon fish in the bay, this will NOT be a points per inch deal. The single heaviest fish will get $100 bucks. The second heaviest will get 50 bucks.

I figure this will give everyone a chance to win something.

If you will be planning to Salmon fish instead of sunset you will need to make sure you have come to the captains meeting at my house Friday night or swing by sunset early and sign your waiver.

All the weighing and measuring will be at Sunset. If  you go out at Sunset, make sure you check in with Dana so we can have a head count of people fishing there.

If you have any questions ask here, NWKA or PM.

OK, Major announcement!!!

Due to circumstances beyond my control we will be unable to have The measure-in, potluck and awards ceremony at Sunset Bay this year. It really sucks and has to do with  State park policies that I never knew about before.

the measure-in and festivities will be at my house, fishing will be allowed at Sunset and  Salmon on the bay as specified before. Please try to check in on Friday evening at the captains meeting. Dana will be at  Sunset early to check in those that don't do facebook early Saturday morning for a couple hours.

The last time to check in fish will be moved to 2:30 pm to allow more time to get my house.

Please bring some ice for the keg if you can

Sorry for the inconvenience. We will not have this issue next year.

See you all tomorrow at 6;30 pm for the captains meeting, we will tap the keg so come a little early if you want to avoid a rush to sign up at 6:30.

Parking will be an issue with this many people coming to my house, please carpool with as many people as possible to lessen the load. Get together with your camp mates  when you come to the captains meeting and for the potluck/awards ceremony please.

don't worry about carpooling when coming to measure/weigh your fish.

Sorry that it got so complicated...

Thanks

And please don't bring dogs to the potluck unless you want to keep them in your vehicle, my dogs do not play well with other dogs...

Do we have an address for the captains meeting and for the everything else after the weigh in? And are the prizes and potluck right after the weigh in or is there a delay between that and check in? Thanks!

A couple things...

Does anyone have a splitting maul they can bring to the potluck? got some big chunks of wood that need to be split.

And please don't bring dogs to the potluck unless you want to keep them in your vehicle, my dogs do not play well with other dogs...
I have one in garibaldi if someone wants to pick it up on the way down and return on the way home.  ;D

Does anyone plan on fishing out of sunset tomorrow? Or are most going to salmon fish out of the bay?

Thank you Roy and Dudi and the whole South Coast NWKA crew. The amount of support and love you all have given to the program is truly amazing. I know when the stars align and HOW opens up shop down there you folks are going to hit the ground running and be a major force for the community we serve.

Think we'll make it down to Simpson next year?

Wait, what?

How are you able to crunch numbers so fast and announce HOW contributions well within 24 hours?
You must have a huge crew in the back room running super computers or something?   ;D

I wanted to say thanks Roy and Dude for another great and successful event.  Even with the unfortunate change up with the location of the weigh in/potluck, your communication was awesome.  The fishing was tough in the ocean, but that is what makes it part of the challenge.  It sounded to me like everyone had a great time regardless of conditions.

All I caught was a facial sun burn.   8)

Great potluck everyone!  That was some good eats for sure.   No, seriously!

Dana, you did a stellar job on your roles as weigh in master, fry cook, and photographer allowing Roy and Dude to participate this year.   Moooocho thanks for taking the time to fill those hats so elegantly.

Already looking forward to next year.   :headbang:

Thanks again to everyone that had a hand in this tournament! Congrats to all that placed and kudos to those that braved the open ocean!
Things went pretty smooth considering everything that went wrong.  ;D

Despite challenges, it sure was a great time! The conditions were less than optimal, but there were fish to be had out there by those with the intestinal fortitude!

Another fine job Roy and Dudi for bringing this all together- and especially for your hospitality for hosting at your place! It was obvious all your hard work with such great sponsors as evidenced by all that was spread all over the tables. Great prizes galore!  It feels soooo good to be part of a group for such a great cause such as HOW! Congratulations!

I feel fortunate enough to pull off catching 3 species for 4th place plus a few more fish for the fish fry. On a side note... there were quite a few Red Irish Lords that were caught and released (weren't on the points/species list to count).

Don't be fooled by the conditions as seen at the launch in the background. It was pretty bumpy out there!

Also its was very nice of everyone to donate the fish fry leftovers to HOW. I put 10 pounds of deliciousness in the freezer for some tacos at our next one!

Thanks to everyone who organized this event.  It was nice to finally meet some of you in person.  The ocean didn't cooperate for my first trip in the salt but I still managed to catch something and that made me happy.  It wasn't a big catch but it was my first from the kayak in the ocean so to me it's HUGE!

I want to thank Roy and Dudi for all the time and effort that they put in to make the 2015 AOTD a success. I am pretty sure that everyone that entered the tournament came out ahead of the entry fee with all the great swag from the drawing and captains bags! Also I would like to mention all the tasty food, especially Dana's excellent fried fish, and the beer from Ninkasi. The weather even cooperated this year with light winds and warm temps. The ocean was a little rough, but lot's of fish were caught including an 18+ pound Ling. It was double nice for me this year as I managed to land a nice Nook while fishing Coos Bay on Thursday. All in all, lots of fun with friends both old and new! Oh, and Art finally caught a salmon!

Enjoyed the pictures Dana!  Great job frying up the fish too. Roy and I appreciate your willingness to help out so we could fish in the tournament this year.
