ADDITIONAL INFO
Just met with owner of Sunrise Motel and Dive Resort in Hoodsport, we will hold the weigh-in and awards ceremony on their back deck. We are also thinking about a possible Potluck or cookout that night during the awards ceremony if there's enough interest and I am hoping to get a keg donated. The Sunrise Motel is offering a 10% discount if you would like to rent one of their units. They also have a Dorm style room that sleeps up to 14 but requires a minimum of 7 persons for $20 per night with a minimum of 2 nights, so some of you may be interested in coordinating to share the Dorm. For those of you bringing family, Hoodsport has shops, a winery and casino nearby. Here is a link. http://myweb.hcc.net/sunrise/
The nice thing about Sunrise Motel is it is right in front of  the area that most will be fishing, it is just passed the hatchery. For those staying at Sunrise, you should be able to launch right off the back deck, they have a boat dock.

Also spoke with the owner of the Hoodsport IGA Market, they will allow us to park in their lot for launching at the public beach directly across from them. We will also set up the Morning Check-In at the IGA parking lot.  We will only be set up at IGA until 9am that Saturday Oct. 18, after that you need to check in at the Sunrise Motel.

If you are not interested in staying at the Sunrise Motel or it gets booked up, campsites are available at the Potlatch Park and a little further up the road past Sunrise Motel is another RV and Motel.

You must be back for Weigh-In no later than 2pm at the Back Deck of the Sunrise Motel, Hoodsport. Reminder, we will be holding the awards ceremony and potluck at 3pm following the Weigh-In.

Man, not for me,  i had done about 25 lbs of pink up to my first chum expedience,  all the pink smoked up great... But the chum...not so much.   Either the fish was too chummy and/or my recipe was bad

There are chums, out in the salt like at Hoodsport, that look pretty good.  In the rivers - not so much.  Chums I have caught out of the Puyallup or Minter Creek have all had white and mushy flesh - only good for eggs and crab bait.  Even so, they are still a lot of fun to catch.

The chum I caught at the last slayride  had orange/pink, firm flesh.  Immediately after catching it, I bled it, and put it in a catch bag on ice.  Probably would have been better to gut it on the water, but I forgot the weigh-in was about length, not weight.

My wife makes a killer salmon dip using smoked pinks or chum - a stick (8 oz) of cream cheese, 1/2 cup chopped macadamia nuts, 1 tbsp lemon juice, and 1-1/2 tbsp chopped green onions.  Whip up the cream cheese to make it softer, or use already whipped from a tub, or add some sour cream.  Shredded smoked salmon to taste - 1/2 to 3/4 cup.

PS - they even make good printing media:

Whats the secret?!

I smoke it real good, cut it up into small pieces and use it in this:
http://nookandpantry.blogspot.com/2007/07/farfalle-with-smoked-salmon-cream.html

I have used it with or with out artichoke hearts.  I liked it either way.  There was another really good recipe we tried, but this was so easy even I could do it with good results.  I also added a lot of broccoli.

Other than this, the only other way I can think of to make it palatable would be to convert it into Dungeness crab by soaking it in a pot.

The flyer said weight, so it wasn't you.  I also didn't bleed/gut mine either since I thought it was weight.  Bleeding and gutting had a huge impact on quality for chum.  Let's hope it ends up as a length contest for this year too.

Spoke to Wilderness Systems Pro Staffer CJ Siebler yesterday. We are changing up the Commander to the New Thresher Offshore kayak (recently released at icast in Florida) as the First Place Prize. He and Matt Grisso are both from the SoCal Chapter of Heroes On The Water and will be flying up for this tournament.
BIG UPS to Wilderness Systems for their huge support!

Also spoke with the owner of the Hoodsport IGA Market, they will allow us to park in their lot for launching at the public beach directly across from them. We will also set up the Morning Check-In at the IGA parking lot.  We will only be set up at IGA until 9am that Saturday Oct. 11, after that you need to check in at the Sunrise Motel.

If you are not interested in staying at the Sunrise Motel or it gets booked up, campsites are available at the Potlatch Park and a little further up the road past Sunrise Motel is another RV and Motel.

Save the date boys and girls, we'll be targeting Chums at Hoodsport on Oct 11 and a kayak for the biggest Dawg is up for grabs, along with other great prizes... More info to follow.

I was searching all the fishing sites - getting pumped for the sleigh ride.  Went Wsdfw double check the regs. It looks like you can't retain chum until Oct 16. "July 1 to Oct 15 release CHUM". I misreading this?

You read it right.  Also read what is highlighted in yellow and look at the diagram at the bottom of the page.  That reg is for the 2000 ft hatchery zone.  Fish outside of it and you're good.

It appears that the regulations will require us to fish outside 2000' of the hatchery/creek, and release unclipped chum?  Last year we were fishing in November, after Oct 15th, so it was OK to fish inside that zone, and OK to keep unclipped chum.  Seems chums I caught were not clipped.
Am I reading this correctly?
If so, is it too late to move the date?

New date for the SlayRide Derby:  October 18, 2014

Sometimes it is mother nature and other times it is regulations that don't cooperate with our tournament dates.  We hope that everyone planning to attend on the 11th can still make it on the 18th.

Hmm, I might be able to make this now that it no longer conflicts with pumpkin carving and a Halloween party.

Speaking of kid activities, is there any reason this wouldn't be kid friendly fishery?  I'm guessing my 8 year old son Owen would really like to hook into a salmon at some point.    It seems like the terminal gear is simple enough.

Brian
I agree with Lee on the tandem. If you need to borrow one, a couple of our HOW-NW Team members may be able to loan you one.....Polyangler?...Big Fish?

I guess I should have replied....  Owen and I usually fish in an OK Malibu 2XL .  He used to sit in the tank well of my OK Ultra 4.3.  He's due for his own kayak in another year or so.

We have 4 people signed up for the bunkhouse so far we need at least 3 more to meet the minimum required. The bunkhouse has a full kitchen and 2 bathrooms. As of right now its $45 for two nights and from what i understand the price may be less the more we have staying in the bunkhouse.

  I'll make reservations Saturday morning.

Unsure if I will be able to make the event but I was at the Hoodsport Hatchery yesterday. I didn't see any signs of chum, no fisherman etc but it was kind of windy. Hopefully the chum are staging just offshore waiting for the rain, I'm no expert but it seems the fish should be showing up any day now. Good thing the event was pushed back another week in my estimation.

Yup, that about sums it up. The power boaters and bankies both HATE us! The PBs because we typically don't anchor and get drug all over the place, and the waders because they're just a bunch of haters that don't have the huevos to kayak them selves. There are the few that will cast at you too, so make sure to steer clear or their range!

Ok guy's need a little help on what is the better set ups for chum.  Trolling cut plug or spinners?  In the video the pb where anchored so are they using spinners, bait (roe), or?  And all hooks are barbless and no treble hooks?
I'll get up there Thursday night hope to fish Friday.

Dana

Single point barbless, up to 2 hooks.  In my limited experience, there doesnt seem to be a favorite set-up- just got to see what's working.  Last year I used maribou jigs - cast towards schools.  And a anchovy or small herring 3 feet below a float is sometimes a killer setup (crimp a split shot on the leader to get the bait down).  They also take squids or K-13's, but Hoodsport is too much of a zoo for trolling much.
Traditional colors of jigs and lures are purple and chartreuse, and but some guys were doing well with red last year.

  Tactics for Hoodsport

I have never fished in front of Hoodsport so I might just be blowing smoke here but I'll try to help.  ::)
Chum salmon seem to key in on green colored lures. The "green" can be spinners, corkie and yarn, wobblers, or whatever your choice might be to throw.
Several folks have mentioned bringing an anchor with you........ I read that to mean there is traffic.
If using herring or anchovies --- go small. And that would be under a bobber-- not trolling.
Jigs under a bobber--- tip it with shrimp or prawns to sweeten the deal.
Other lures that you have confidence in--- try 'em out. You never know til you try.
If it is too crowded near Finch Creek-- move out and try trolling along the drop off using whatever feels best.
Keep an eye out for what the guys bringing in fish are using. That's always true.

There are a lot of different tactics you can use. Chum salmon are great fighters and if they are there we will get some. They are very aggressive fish. And a lot of fun to catch.

I'll emphasize green again --- but probably any color will work if you get a lure in their face. That's salmon fishing. So use what you have confidence in and " make it happen".

A quick release anchor set up is recommended. Just an fyi, I've had some fish drag me, even with an 8 lb mushroom anchor.... Hence the "SlayRide".

So I'm still on the fence about this.  If I do make it, it will just be for the day with my son.

Is there a place to get a WA fishing license in or near Hoodsport before 9 am on Saturday?   I'd rather not make a special trip up to Vancouver in the next couple nights just for that and it's too late to get a catch card in the mail if I buy my license online.

Walmart in Shelton on the way up. They're open 24 hours. I got one last year there in the morning before hitting the water.

You can get them at Fisherman's. At least at the Delta Park store.  That is where I got mine last year. Dick's may also sell them.

Also, good luck to all you participants.  I wish I could be there, but it is my job to keep Wobbler, Ndogg, Langcod, and Lingbanger out of the Mexican Judicial system.  I here it can be a little unpleasant.

Catching fish and winning prizes are great, but I just love hanging out and meeting new people. Like John Knox told me this weekend. It's great to put faces and real names to people's screen names. Sunrise Motel owner Frank wants us to come back and make it an annual event at his place. He's going to help rally local support from other Hoodsport businesses and he will block out the entire Motel for us to rent rooms. This weekend we shared the place with a couple of dive schools.
