Again, sorry for the delay. I have someone at Elks bringing it up again at the next meeting. Hope to have confirmation soon.
-
:spittake:I'm in
-
Just got word from BallardBrad. The Elks Club of Ballard is letting us use their place to launch (there will be some rules to launching at the Elks tba, no one will be resticted to launching only from the Elks.) and we'll be able to use the bar or banquet room for the awards ceremony depending on the final head count. They have a bbq grill that we will have access to as well, might be able to grill up fresh caught cohos. More info to follow.
-
Sounds great. I hope I can make it.
-
I'm sure Dino will post on the HOW NW site, but here's the event / waiver on the Ballard Elks site http://ballardelks.org/lodge-events/coho-kayak-classic/
-
Gonna be a good time!
-
Bump..check out the first page for new info.
-
Werner Paddles has joined up as a sponsor. More to follow.

Great to see Werner Paddles involved in this event. They have deep roots in the PNW and are increasing their direct involvement in Kayak Fishing Events. More sponsor support is always welcome.
-
To early to sign up?
-
I'm really looking forward to this event. Great job Dino with putting this together.
-
I'm lucky to live 3 blocks from where we'll launch for this event and have fished this Coho fishery for the past dozen years from a kayak. This is my backyard, but don't think I'll keep an great advantage because of this. I'll be posting maps and other information on how the Coho are moving as the event approaches to level the playing field. I hope to see plenty of kayaks on the water this year.
-
Right smack in the middle of archery elk season. Bummer, would have loved to make it out for this one.
-
How did I miss this anouncement?!?!
Hopefully I can make this one!
-Spot-
-
I'll be in between quarters at school that time in September. If the rest my schedule allows I hope to be there.
-
Waivers and link to pay for tournament is on the 1st page. Sign up early!

How is the cell service out there? I am toying with the idea of setting up a live stream from my kayak of me fishing the tournament.
-
We have 7 participants signed up so far. Just a reminder that the first 24 to sign up get a Free Silver Horde lure and the first 60 get a Tournament shirt sponsored by Seattle Sports.
-
you guys and your tourneys in the middle of hunting season!!!!! I'd be there if it wasn't for that. Maybe I'll get an elk opening weekend..... :)
-
Lol that's what I'm going for!
-
Hey All. Please include your screen name on PayPal when you send your payment. Don't forget to download the waivers and mail them in to save time in the morning of the tournament. We're up to 9 signed up now.

The unit I'm hunting is "any elk" so maybe I'll stumble upon a cow.... the cow I shot last year is delicious. Then I can concentrate on a trophy sized buck for the rest of the season.
-
Just paid up.
-
Is anyone having issues finding and downloading the waivers on the first page?
-
Dino,
The pdf file would not open. The Word file worked. You cannot find the waiver files unless you go to the original post.

Cell service should be fine out there. I have Verizon and have never had a problem out there. Chinook season just closed in area 10 so be sure you're keeping coho only.

The cut off to get a shirt size pre ordered will be Aug 23. If you sign up after this date, it will be first come... first served of the sizes available. So please sign up asap. Thanks again for your support.

Update on the Coho conditions:
I paddled from Bellingham to Shilshole on Friday thru Sunday last weekend (about 70 nm). There were a few fish in the San Juan's, mostly off Lopez. Then a large and very dispersed school from Admiralty Head to a few miles north of Kingston. The bait is very spread out this year with the highest density around Admiralty Head. I didn't see any active surface feeding and most marks were down around 35 feet on average. Lots of PBs fishing north of Kingston up to Point no Point but not a lot of nets out.
The Coho have to eventually make it deeper into the Puget Sound, and Shilshole were we can target them for this derby. I hope they put a move on it. There's not a lot of catching going on in Shilshole yet, or the bay would be full of PBs and it's just not. If they have fattened up on ocean herring and are taking their leisurely time and waiting for rain, then we might have to hope for rain before the derby and go for the irritation bite in shallow water. This happened about 7 years ago and the bite was great in 1 to 6 feet of water for a couple of weeks, I landed my personal best 14.3 lb Coho when they did this. Shore anglers had a blast too.
I'll keep adding updates and fingers crossed they start to move in soon.
-
Thanks for the update Todd! looking fwd to another competitive salmon tourney!
-
Argh. I was just in Ballard yesterday. Should have retuned the business trip! I'll be resting from a week in Kodiak!
Good luck to everyone and be safe!!!!
-
All paid up
-
Just got paid up the doc. said no salmon fishing until Oct. so I'm not going to tell him
-
Looking forward to this event and meeting some of you.
Just fished north of Lincoln park this morning for Coho and 2 minutes in the troll, a shaker :] My buddy saw a seal with a salmon and a jumper. Always a great feeling to be out on the water.
Will be heading Deception Pass this Friday after work to Saturday and try it out there and continue practicing.
-
It's getting down to the wire...We now have 30 Participants. Those of you still on the Fence, we are giving a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 with Rudder and YakAttack Fishing package to give away to First Place ($1200 value). As well as some other great prizes. The Awards Ceremony will be at the Ballard Elks Lodge and they will be offering up a Special Burger, Fries and a Beer for only $7.
If you don't see a letter "T" next to your name, it means I do not have your shirt size yet. If I don't get your shirt size by this evening, I will be ordering a random quantity of Medium, Large and XLarge.
I will post an update tonight for those that I have received Waivers and I will add the letter W next to your name.
-
Reports are looking good for Ballard. The recent rain has started bringing in the fish. More rain expected for Tuesday, should be plenty of fish by Friday. You still have time to sign up.
-
I just posted kayak launching info in a separate thread that can be found here: http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=14103.0
-
If anyone wants to fish other than the Shilshole area, you may do so. But you must fish within the Puget Sound area. Also, we must have your waivers/registration and your $40 fee must be paid prior to you going out on the water.
-
Any tips before my last tackle run? I think I am geared up just want to check
-
Any tips before my last tackle run? I think I am geared up just want to check
Anything spinning/flashy that can be fished between 5 and 75 feet.
-
We are up to 41 Entrees. If you haven't signed up and are still on the fence, Reports are...The Fish Are In!!!
We will still be accepting fees and registration/waivers at the Elks Lodge. You can still send in you payment for your fee via PayPal and just bring in your paperwork to turn in first thing in the morning at Elks.
-
Fyi...This tournament will be based on the heaviest coho. It is your choice to bleed your fish but do not gut your fish. Thank you.
-
Yo Dino - thanks much for organizing. I am really looking forward to some coho fishing and hanging out with you guys!
I didn't see a "W" next to my name. I emailed a scanned copy of my waiver a couple weeks ago - let me know if you didn't get it. printer is broke :(
Also, the edmonds coho derby is this day and given edmonds doesn't have a boat ramp, a LOT of guys will be launching at shilshole and cruising north. There will likely be 400 boats out just for that event alone, plus the normal weekend boat volume. Be super careful y'allz!
I'm gonna launch at my secret spot! ;)
-
I got it Rory! Thanks
-
Hey guys...If you don't see a W next to your name, it means I don't have your waivers and registration.
-
Really wish I could make this but life has gotten in the way. Good luck to all the participants and may the cohos bite fast and furious all day long!
-
Is channel 69 still the go to channel for the kayak anglers? Looking forward to seeing some of you out on the water. Wayne
-
Yah I'll be on 69. Cya tomorrow!
-
How'd this go guys?
-
Had A great time. Thanks to Dino and crew for putting together such A assume tournament. A special thanks to the Ballard Elk's for their hospitality. And extra special THANK YOU to wilderness systems for my new kayak. thanks again to all it was a blast. I will see you all at the slay ride. Dan
-
I had a lot of fun as well and it was good to meet some of you at the event. Congratulations DHD! Sweet looking Kayak ;)
And thanks Dino, Brad, and volunteers for a great event.
See you on the next one.
-
I want to thank everyone that participated and helped out as well as thank all our sponsors for their generosity to make this event a success.
After making a $200 donation to the Ballard Elks Veteran's Fund, just over $1500 was raised for Heroes On The Water NWest. Your support will help local warriors to reconnect, rehabilitate and reintegrate.
Results from the Coho Kayak Classic.
Fishing was tough even for the PBs competing in another coho derby.
Only 3 participants were lucky enough to land a fish (in Polyangler's case 2 Cohos). There were a few shakers and other undersized. As well as some lost at the net.
1st Place winner of the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 went to DHD Dan Chaffin, his fish weighed in at 4.87 lbs.
Congratulations Dan!

A Special Thanks to Seattle Sports, not only did they donate 3 Catch coolers and Anchor set up. They paid for the Tournament Tees for all the participants. If you did not get your t-shirt, I will bring them to the SlayRide Derby, so don't forget to sign up.
