I've been using an Abu Garcia "black" for a while and generally have been happy but wanted a metal drag and smoother bearings so I picked up a promax3 at the sportsman's show this year and matched it up with a Fenwick 7' HMG Med heavy.

It has been half a year now and I have had nothing but issues with this reel.  If I tune it to feel smooth, It's backlash city.  If I tune it to cast without backlash it is locked down pretty tight and the whole reel just feels rough.  I've tried greasing the gears but it didn't feel any different.  I've tried a couple different types of braid with no difference and just now spooled up some mono for next time.  The reel is clean.  I just can't figure out what is going on.  This reel gets fantastic reviews online with no mention of these kinds of issues.  I can cast my other baitcasters just fine.

Any of you using this reel?  Any issues?

I have two of the Promax reels that I use for bass fishing and have had no problems at all with them. Are you using only the spool tensioner knob on the same side as the reel handle to try to prevent backlash? If you look at the picture here, that little dial on the other side of the reel is the magtrax dial. Make sure you're turning it the correct direction to get more anti-backlash control. If you have the reel full, but not overfull, of line and the spool tension knob adjusted for the weight of your lure, you should be able to find a anti-backlash setting with the little magtrax dial. The only confusing thing to me when I got my first promax was figuring out which way to turn the dial. A buddy that I was fishing with last time out even commented on how I was "casting that plastic worm a mile" when we were working some lily pads.

I am tuning it with both the spool knob and the magtrax.  Spool knob is set such that the lure drops pretty quickly but smooth, then setting the Magtrax somewhere in the middle based on test casts. replaced the line with some 20 in mono and it is behaving better, so I'm thinking the braid I was using (proline, spiderwire) maybe was dragging through the eyelet somehow?  It still seems feels a little draggy, but much better than before so I don't know.  I'll try some of the slick 8 stuff I guess.  It works well on my spinning reels, though tying knots with it can be tricky.
