Count me in!
-
Here is the link to the last tournament. http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=11363.0
Note that this was 2013, as Pinks (humpies) only run every other year. Don't miss out on the fun!
-
I'm definitely in! Hopefully 23" is the smallest fish this year. The guy in the Facebook pic is a bit scary looking though :). As the details emerge, I volunteer brewing some IPA (if the venue allows). Wayne
-
How is the Humpy fishing going right now? I'm considering going to this event :)
-
No humpies yet. I hear they are showing out of neah bay. Usually not in the south sound for few more weeks.
-
I'd like to attend this if I'm able. I need to read up on tactics and tackle.
-
Sweet, looks like it is time to get my Washington licence.
-
Super bummed I will be at Outdoor Retailer during this one. Really planned on making it and was waiting for date release!
-
I'd like to attend this if I'm able. I need to read up on tactics and tackle.
I did my August column in Northwest Sportsman on pink fishing from a kayak. It should be out at the end of July.
Luv dem pinks!
-
I read a report that some are already showing in Puget Sound up north...I wonder if they will be in earlier this year? I thought about hitting Browns Point just for the heck of it after work one night. If I do I will post a report...If there is anything to report...It is freaking dead down here...
-
There's a few stragglers here and there in Neah Bay and less in the inlet and sound proper. Look at the end of the month to see any real activity. But really, wait until the end of August, because that's when it all pops off!
Luv dem pinks!
Soooooo good!
-
Too close to the end of the summer quarter and I'll have projects to wrap up and exams to study for. I'll have to wait for the 2017 tournament and hope that work schedules don't interfere. If it was August 22 I might have been able to squeeze it in.
-
I knew August 8th sounded familiar. It is my anniversary, so it looks like I am out.
-
Might be able to make this tournament. Never fished for pinks but would love to try. Waiting for more details!
-
If this is your first go around with Pinks this is a pretty helpful video.

-
Would've loved to given this a go, but I won't be able to make this one (kiddo has his first diabetic camp and I get to be his guest). So as much as I love fishing, I'll take hanging out with my buddy. Hopefully next year dates will line up better.

Just Added Lucid Fishing to our Sponsors. Thanks Polyangler for the hookup.
-
Please Note the Rule Change.
We are making this one the Heaviest Bag Limit up to 4 Humpies. So do your best to catch your limit.
-
Should be a blast!
-
I think I might make this this year. Do most people stay at Dash Point State Park? Any other recommendations for where to stay in the area? I'm deciding weather to bring my camper or try to get a motel.
-
Dash point has several sites available when I checked about an hour ago. Looks like all the hookup sites are taken, but lots of standard sites available.
-
I know it is a little early but my buddy and I launched at Browns Point yesterday morning and worked the area between there and Dash Point. We were working the shoreline letting the current move us then we would paddle back and repeat. We saw one person take one from shore but not one thing was taken by boats at all. We were getting ready to head in after about 3.5 hours and then my buddy had a take down and brought in about a nice 4 lb pink right in front of the lighthouse. It is always nice to catch a fish in front of the PB'ers - especially when they have caught NOTHING. Arms were jello when we were done...That current rips in front of the lighthouse. Should be more fish coming in...Maybe with the rain????
-
They will show up in heavy numbers soon. When the pinks show, they flood the area.
-
Great grand prize! Wish I could make this one.
-
Just added Orion Cookers to the Sponsorships.

I just got word from Jeff Hunt Regional Manager for 7-11 and recent participant of our last Heroes On The Water -NW Crabbing/Fishing Event that 7-11 is going to donate enough 1/4 lb dogs/buns, chips and water for the participants. I will be onshore grilling up the dogs at Dash Point State Park where the weigh in and check in will be. If you get hungry before 2pm, I will be firing up the grill around 10am and I will have ALL the participants names on a list to come by and get 1 dog, 1 bag of chips and a water. (I'll have plenty of extra water even if you want to come by and grab a few). I will check your names off the list when you come by. Thanks again guys for your support.

It's gonna be fun guys. If you can catch a trout you should come join us, pink catching is a lot of fun, and unlike the previous location, there should be a ton of fish there. Several guys have been hitting it already.
Kayak Shed will be joining the sponsor list soon. Lets have some fun AND support a great cause!

Signed up. Waiver on the way. Looking forward to a great day of fishing. Just got back from my first trip to AK, Homer. Came home a nice batch of fish. Charter fished two day (supposed to be three but the team huntress boat broke down). Can't wait to get up there again.

Alright guys.. Wayne is back to defend his title...

Just made reservations at Dash Point and paid. Now it is time to see how things go on Friday before I leave.

They are coming. Gary Crane of All Star Charters limited on Pinks this morning outside of Shilshole Marina in Ballard.

Read my mind. That thing is a tank.

What store would I be able to buy all of the tackle I need to fish for pinks close by Dash State Park? I'll be coming over I-90 from the Tri-Cities late in the afternoon on Friday. I can't find what I need over here. I was thinking maybe Cabelas or Sportco?
Thanks
-
There's a Sportsmans Warehouse in Federal Way, at the intersection of Hwy 99 and Hwy 18.
Sportco is about another 6 miles south in Fife, but can be a pain to get to if you're not familiar with the area.
update;
Totally missed the fact you're coming in on I 90... In that case, exit in Seattle and hit up Outdoor Emporium, sister store to Sportco. Then use Hwy 99 to head south to Federal Way.
-
Dino, Lee,
Sorry won't be able to make this one. Looks like the gods don't ever want me to catch a pink salmon. Good side of it is, I can go back to work now at more than limited capacity....

It's pretty similar to kokanee gear. Watch that video that Zee linked.

It was 51 inches long. Looking at conversion charts, it was 45-50 pounds My first big ling and was a beat to get in.
-
WR, Thanks for the info on the Sportco in Seattle and Sportsmann's Warehouse. I'm sure I'll be able to find what I need and it's on the way We don't have too many pinks over here on the East side, so the stores don't carry very much Humpy gear..
-
Done gone and signed up. Planning on being there. Got a campsite as well. I did have trouble with downloading the waiver to fill out. if someone could email me a copy I would appreciate it.

Hoping for a lot more fish than yesterday... The dear spousal unit decided she wanted to go fishing, so we went up to Point No Point and joined the combat fishery up there. Hit most of the morning ebb tide cycle, tossing pink jigs, buzz-bomb, and a plastic squid hoochie from shore, ended up with only one sculpin and a not-quite-worth-keeping flounder for the day. We saw one other shore fisherman get a salmon-sized hit, but it got away from him. Saw one net being used for a capture (out of the dozens of floating platforms out drifting/trolling/mooching). Not a high-percentage day for anyone...
So here's to hoping the pinks will be at Dash Point already!
Jim (my day will be a success if I catch one salmon and get my boat finally blooded...)
-
Hey RoxnDon Point No Point doesn't get a lot of fish that pass through occasionally they do but it isn't much so keep your hopes up! All I can say is they are in at Dash Point. The past 2 days Ive gone out, I hooked into about 14 fish and lost 9 of them ending up with 5 total for those 2 days.

Just a reminder, tomorrow will probably be the last day to mail in a check for your tournament fees. Please make checks payable to Dino Abulencia and put 2015 Humpy Kayak Classic in the memo. Thanks again for your support.

I have a camp site at Dash Point for Friday Night that I don't think I need anymore ( I am driving up Saturday morning). Because of the fees, it is not worth canceling it. If anyone wants it they can have it for the base registration price, $30. Just let me know and I will change the name on the reservation.

Just paid/emailed waiver. Looking forward to participating in my first tourney!

In it to win it. Payment/waiver sent.

QUESTION - I know that we can't start fishing Dash Pt until 7AM, but can we fish other permitted locations as early as we want?
Thanks again
I'm working on getting to Dash Point and opening the gate by 6am or earlier. I will try to post by Friday evening if I am able. Also, monitor the tournament facebook page as well.
-
QUESTION - I know that we can't start fishing Dash Pt until 7AM, but can we fish other permitted locations as early as we want?
Thanks again
Yes, this is in the rules section, but you gotta make the weigh-in by 2pm. For me that kinda means launching from the park, as parking will likely be slim to nil by noon with the weather we've been having. But you could always arrive and depart the weigh-in by kayak.
-
Ah, shoot. I was planning on packing it in from the other location and getting back to Dash Pt by weigh-in, but hadn't considered the fact that parking would be an issue. :/
-
See you guys there!
-
I wish I could make this, but my wife reserved a campsite up on Mount Hood 9 months ago. If I missed that, my salmon season would most likely be very short.
-
Thing about luck it is always worst when you need it to be the best... I paid my entry, I reserved a campsite for fri/sat night, I get to get out of work early on Friday. Whats wrong with that you say? My Transmission in my car took a dump yesterday.... If there are any North Enders considering going down, I got a sweet campsite for two nights and plenty of beer and gas money for a lift.. I know kind of short notice but I thought it worth putting out there. would consider the day trip just for Saturday if available. if anyone has option I'm open to hear it.
-
I'm staying at the campground at Dash Point State Park. Where is the check in and weigh in located at the park? I might have overlooked this information, but can't find it. lI,m sure I'll be able to find it , thought I'd ask.
Thanks
Mike
Check in is on the beach at Dash Point State Park (not to be confused with Dash Point Pier)...also noted on the first page.
-
I realize this fish is a little small for the brag board, but I figured I'd share it because a: I caught it this afternoon off of Dash Point; b: this was the first humpy I've ever caught; and c: this was also the first salmon I've landed in my new ride.
So, it's a bit of a (somewhat pathetic) brag for me, and, hopefully, a sign of good things to come for this Saturday. I didn't see a ton of fish being caught, but there were quite a few nets out. If a noob like myself can do it, I'm sure that you seasoned vets are going to bang 'em up.
-
Good job! First fish are always good confidence builders! Those pinks are great fun. I caught my first one for this season last s
Sunday and went with my kokanee rod. What a blast!

Hey Doc, you give hope to another noob ;D See ya Saturday, save 4 of 'em for me... Any salmon I catch will be my first too!
Jim
-
I will be there also. have to reserve camp site.
-
I'm all signed in. I landed 2 and lost 20 of them yesterday testing out different gear and techniques. So I got the loosing part down just fine, hope some stick better for Saturday.
-
right there w/ ya, yaktrap. my landing ratio on these the past few outings has been kokanee-esque. 3 for 10 or 12 last saturday, and 3 for 8 or 10 on sunday, with the majority of those lost having come unbuttoned at the net. ouch!
-
I am just happy to hear you guys are getting into fish.

Portion of Marine Area 9 closes to salmon fishing

Species affected: Coho and pink salmon.
Location: Waters south and west of a line from Foulweather Bluff to Olele Point to the Hood Canal Bridge in Marine Catch Area 9.

In case you're reading this and concerned, the tournament is in area 11

I will be there also. have to reserve camp site.
I think the campsite might all be booked up. Check Ndoggs post on here, he is offering up his campsite.

I still have the campsite if anyone wants it.
I know that we have to use barbless hooks but are there any other gear restrictions we need to know about?

2 single point barbless hooks are the max. Look at using a 1/0 siwash on your Buzz Bombs, spoons, and spinners with octopus on anything else.

Sadly, I just got an email that they are shutting down part of area 9.
Don't sweat it too much. The better and more accessible parts of the 9 pink fishery will stay open.

Not having fished these waters before I have a silly question. Are furbags a problem in the area? I haven't ponied up for a catch cooler bag yet and I don't want to just throw the pinks in the milk crate like I do rockfish in the open ocean. I avoid fish around on a stringer, but tempted to risk fate for this event.

Try using a burlap sack. Helps keep fish cool and protects from seal thieves.

I think I have a few of those laying around. Do salmon sharks make it that far into the sound?

Go to trader joes or costco and get you one of these for $6.99 (in-store only, whereas they're 3x that online), then throw a few frozen water/soda bottles in there) - http://www.amazon.com/Trader-Joes-Extra-Insulated-Shopping/dp/B00BAF0XQ0

I would NOT dangle fish overboard. There are furbags in the area and they will pilfer if given the opportunity. Burlap or something with some ice or a frozen water bottle, etc.
-
I paid via paypal and will bring the waiver with me. Probably get a bit of late start, but I'll still have plenty of time to smoke all y'alls asses. No worries there :P :P :P :P
-
Not having fished these waters before I have a silly question. Are furbags a problem in the area? I haven't ponied up for a catch cooler bag yet and I don't want to just throw the pinks in the milk crate like I do rockfish in the open ocean. I avoid fish around on a stringer, but tempted to risk fate for this event.
Not really. I'd worry about the condition of your fish more. Pinks need to be bled and iced to be their tastiest. A cheap cooler and some ice will make that happen. Dangling in the water all day and they might be crab bait. :confused3:
I think I have a few of those laying around. Do salmon sharks make it that far into the sound?
There's a report from back in the day that a GWS made it own there. :angry5:
-
You know, I think I am going to leave the 20/0 hooks at home.

-
I'm hopin' youse guys what knows how to catch these things will be so busy talking sheeeet to each other, da rest of us can sneak in there and land all them fishies for ourselves! >:D

Jon, remind us all again how many pinks you've landed from your yak this season?
-
Ahaha I'll take the penis mightier for $200 Trebek!
-
For anyone who may have missed what just happened there, that's Jon's attempt at "humorously" deflecting the question.
He's landed zero, despite his valiant and flailing efforts.
I expect that trend to continue through the weekend.
-
Yes yes, 0 for 3 in about an hour of fishing since I had to attend to the lady on that broken Outback we borrowed from you. Fix that seat please.

Well that's a weird way of saying 'thanks' ;D

Smoked tuna belly. We are enemies until this tourney is over.

Deal. As soon as it's over I'll let you borrow my new Kraken, since that's what friends are for.

Sounds fabulous. I'm targeting coho anyway.

Ok. Just got word we can go in earlier. I'll be heading over to try and open the main gate by 5pm. Everyone must park and offload at the parking lot. Thanks see y'all there.
-
Great event! Dino, Scott and y'all who helped put this together: THANKS! It was great to see everybody and fish a new spot. Special thanks to the guy who helped me out after I dropped my kayak off my truck! :-/ you'd think I'd know how to load it by now.
-
Thanks to Dino and the crew. And to all the other Anglers, for making a new guy feel welcome. It was fun and I had a great time. Despite the lack of fish.
-
Definitely had a great time with the NWKA guys and HoW's finest!
-
What a fun event! Looking forward to the next.
-
Thanks Dino and family, and everyone involved for putting on this great event. I'll be be back in two years to avenge my devastating failure of defending the most honored humpy crown.
-
Who's posting pics/results? I couldn't make it yesterday, but I think I'm going to head over there this afternoon. How'd everyone make out?
-
It was a great day and a lot of fun, thanks so much to Dino and the whole crew! I don't recall the names but 74 anglers, 14 fish, well a few more but they were flounder and sculpins and such...

Tip of the cap to Dino and the crew for a very well run event and to the sponsors for supporting a great cause. Don't think I've ever seen as many kayak anglers gathered in Tacoma waters. Though the fish weren't as supportive of the event, the camaraderie and goodwill more than made up for it. I don't plan to miss any future HoW events.
-
Thank you to Dino and everyone involved for organizing this event. I had an great time! Fishing was a bit slow, but it was awesome to see that many yak anglers out on the water for such a great cause.
-
Not a ton of fish but a ton of anglers. That was really great to see. Thanks so much to Dino, Scott, and everyone else who made the event happen. The number of prizes were amazing. All that money going to HOW just makes it better. #KarmaToBurn

Also anxious to hear how others did. We shot down first thing to just south of the lighthouse, then worked our way back near the pier. Was frustrating seeing a decent number of fish taking the elevator ride up to the pier while my friend and I only had one hookup between the two of us. Only saw one kayaker haul in a fish. They say 3rd time is a charm so I am also anxious for the next humpy event and hope the scales get a work out weighing all the fish caught. Every year is a success since it raises money for such a great cause.

same experience as yours - launched @ 5;30, trolled around the pier area for a while, headed down to brown's pt, then back up, only saw two fish pulled in by yakkers. word is that fishing shallow - 10FOW or so - was the ticket for the winner.
-
Surprised no one has announced who has that new Kracken. laughingsteelhead should know that if he would have pulled off the repeat, it says in the very very small print on that form he filled out that he would have had to put on a free "Humpy Clinic" for the rest of us ;D
-
Guess who has the Kraken? :o >:( :D ;)

Sorry guys. Busy day cleaning up gear from the tournament.
First of all, I want to thank everyone that came out to support the 2015 Humpy Kayak Classic. We had 78 paid participants, the support of NWKA and other kayak fisherman from around the Northwest as well as some NWKA brothers that travelled as far as TriCities, Portland and Eugene. Your support is much appreciated. Without YOU we would not have a tournament.
I would also like to thank our sponsors Jackson Kayak, Kayak Academy & Werner Paddles, 7-11, Yak-Gear/Railblaza, Orion Cookers, RAM Mounts, Kayak Shed, Kokatat, Next Adventure, YakAttack, Lucid Fishing Mountain to Sound Outfitters, Sealect Designs, Fish & Game Bags, Seattle Sports, Sportsman's Warehouse, Skwoosh and Gig Harbor Fly Shop. Also want to thank John Knox for donating a sweet custom Kokanee rod to the prize pool and Tony Laugh for the custom made steel welded coat rack.
Special Thanks to my wife Dulce, my HOW-NW Team, Terese Aguero and my family for helping out with set up and cleanup for the tournament. Also to Scott for helping out yesterday.
Now, a huge Congratulations to Adrian Gimenez. He is our youngest competitors at only 18yrs old to win one of our tournaments, he was the only one to catch a full limit of Pink Salmon awarding the Jackson Kayak Kraken.

Dino, Dulce and Scott thanks for putting on such a great tourney. I didn't end up with any fish, but spending some time with you and the Washington NWKA contingent were well worth it.
