Last weekend I caught some big kokanee and some medium-sized lake trout.

On July 3 I caught 8 kokanee in the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir, which has the biggest kokanee I know of in Montana, and possibly the tastiest as well.  Most of them were between 15 and 16 inches long, and one was 16.5 inches.  Fishing on this reservoir has spoiled me for kokanee fishing elsewhere.  Now I can’t get excited about catching a 10.5 inch kokanee, which is all you can expect in most lakes in Montana.

On July 5 I caught a 25 inch and a 26 inch lake trout on Lindbergh Lake, which are medium sized lake trout, but a lot of fun to catch.  One of the lake trout rolled over and over in my net and created a hideous snarl.  It took me about 15 minutes to get my lure out of the net.

Nice looking fish!!!

Scenery looks a lot like the Alaska lakes!  I may try the Lake trout later in the fall.  We will see if I can break free from the salt.
