I heard Shane's boat only got 3 kings today. That's definitely a slow day for him. I think it was slow for everybody. I'm ditching  the kayak tomorrow and going out with Shane. Hopefully he'll find us some!

Plenty of power boats on the water  today, but I don't know if any of them were using the ramp. I fished almost all day for a pollock. Didn't see anyone doing much to the kings, in Tupperware or PBs.

Power boats were getting out from the ramp but only the center 3 lanes were open. Ice plugged the two outside lanes. Only a single trail through the ice to the harbor mouth.  Shane confirmed it was tough catching even for the power boats today. He went 3 for 5 and just as he finally got on the fish the gang wanted to go in and missed a good bite that Steve Walli was on.

Harbormaster did call back this evening. He confirmed the slow fishing - he spoke with several charters that were pulling out at the ramp and only two boats had one each.

Hello !, I will be heading down to Homer in MAy 11 to the 15th. Is it possible to catch kings during this time?  I'm actually new into the kayaking and well I will be getting some practice before I do this in the ocean. Is there anything that you would recommend as far as what to use and how to properly rig for trolling?

Thanks,
Fernando

Unless you have access to an indoor pool, you might not find any open water to practice in before May, Fernando. Fortunately the end of the Spit in Homer is a fairly safe playground when the weather is good (compared to other spots on Cook Inlet), but it is not without its hazards.  The currents are not too bad, and there are usually plenty of witnesses (if not other kayakers) around in case you get into trouble. Chop can stand up very quickly depending on the currents and winds. The harbor is right around the corner so there is a lot of power boat traffic.

Are you equipped for the cold? Safety should be your #1 concern, as our water is cold enough to kill you if you aren't prepared for it. If you are new to kayaking, you probably shouldn't be going out alone. There are lots of experienced kayakers that fish the Inlet, so it won't be hard to find someone that can help you figure things out.

As far as tackle and tactics, read through the posts in this forum. Kardinal_84 has written a lot of good posts on this fishery and his recommendations are a good place to start.
