I've had several Lowarance fish finders for years, and love them.  However, I seem to have to replace them every few years for one reason or another. Each time, taking advantage of their upgrade special where they give you 50% off of a new one if you upgrade.

However, today, was disappointing.  My latest fish finder, the Hook 5, was due for a software upgrade.  I downloaded the upgrade onto two different micro sd cards, and followed the instructions.  However, the FF would not read either card.  I contacted support today.  I've only had this fish finder since last summer, upgrading from a dead Elite 5 that was only 18 months old.  The service rep informed me that new models do carry a 1 year warranty, but, replacement "new" models only carry a 6 month warranty.  I don't recall seeing any fine print on that.  I asked what's the difference, and why they would have a different warranty.  I got the run around, needless to say.  He said I could send it in for a look, but would need to pay for a replacement.  That didn't sit well with me at all.

I told him I would use the fish finder as is, and when it's time for an upgrade, I may go a different direction, as fish finders should last for several years.

I don't know what else to do. The Fish finder works fine, but the software upgrade does speed up the operating system and adds a few nice to haves.

Any thoughts?

Run it till it dies, and then try another brand.  There are plenty of other great brands pumping out good stuff that you don't have to feel locked into brand loyalty.

Lousy customer service does not deserve your money.

If I remember correctly, when I did my update on my Lowrance Elite 4 it took me a few trys.  I think there were specific criteria for the SD card.   Size, format, speed.  I'll look around and see if I can find that info again.  Once I got the magic configuration it updated like a charm on the first try.

Thanks for the tip.  I tried a 2 gig and a 32 gig card, multiple times, and it's not reading either one.  I will look around and see if I have anything else and give it a try.

I also submitted my opinion on their website, hoping that someone will see it and have some thoughts on how to make it right.

Check this:

https://www.lowrance.com/Global/Lowrance/Documents/Software/Lowrance_Legacy_Product_Update_Instructions.pdf

The SD Card must be larger than 512mB but not larger than 1gB.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip Tinker.  I had to order a 1 gig micro sd card for $3.  I remember when those were state of the art technology.

I will give that a shot, and hopefully it works.

You're lucky it was so cheap. I had to buy an 64mb Compact flash card a while back to do an update similar to this and it was  $25 for a one time use. Sucks you have to do that just to run an update though.
