So I am going to set the date.  The 5th Annual Alaska Yak Classic will be held June 24th.

The bad news, there is a minus 5 tide.
The good news, there is a minus 5 tide...at 6am.

I plan to start the event at daylight on the June 24th so people can try and hit the massive low tide.  Less ambitious folks can try and hit the noon high tide.  The derby will end at 5pm.

Target species is halibut.  Heaviest single fish wins.

So save the date!  Let's fish!

I just finished welding up my tow receiver davit hoist for the truck I'll bring along (just in case) that can accommodate a 6+foot 200+ pound halibut for photos.  ;D

Have scales that go to 110 lbs. If you get one bigger than that cut it in half and we can weigh the chunks. LOL I think someone had a big scales last year for the fish rack and assume they are bringing that for the official equipment.

I'm planning on being there unless I'm dead. (Got some friends with a PB launching off the WG beach today for this evening's tide and then also fishing the morning tide before coming home so should have a report on their success later.)

Think BIG fish. I'm bringing a bag of feeder king heads for my bait!  The tides are definitely going to present a challenging variable. With respect to the King Salmon Closed Zones at Anchor River and Stariski Creek where all fishing is closed, unless you are outside the mile wide corridor allowing fishing anywhere, you will have a fairly short open stretch along the beach to fish between the two cutoffs with a fast moving tide. So I assume most of the party will be a mile out.  At least there will be safety in numbers!  Like a pod of sea otters.  ;)

Looking forward to it Rudy. I might have to work on some sort of consolation prize for a runner up or two or three. Hey its only money and you can't take it with you!! Maybe I'll hit Sportsmans for some things too.

I will be landing on a red-eye flight in Anchorage that morning after spending three weeks on a remote tropical island (Wake Island), so I don't think I'll be able to make it.  I was looking forward to this event, and I wish all the anglers a SAFE and FUN competition. Heard of some close calls last year, let's not make a repeat of that. Good luck!

Rudy, I'm anxiously awaiting instructions on how to register for this event or is in person only at WG on the 23rd?  Either way I'm planning on being there.

Looking forward to it! I'll be there for sure.

Low sky and Martin- thank you for your service, wish u could be there. (Assuming you're military...don't know why else you'd be in Saudi or wake island)

Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I get to kill something.

Fun in the sun, bro! My government sponsored travel days are behind me. I'm over here because oil and gas work in Alaska is still in the crapper.

Thanks brother. I'm fortunate, at least at Wake I can get some nice diving in!  I could think of much worse places the Air Force could send me.

Looking forward to it! I'll be there for sure.

No fee. No real need to enter though I will be posting a "who is in?" Thread. Just show up, be safe, and catch a fish!!!

Sounds good to me .... 24th still a good day, so planning to come down Friday.   Not sure I can get there with time to fish Friday, but looking forward to some time on the water!
