My mechanic got this beautiful functional piece at an estate sale by the serial numbers it was built in 1948. I emailed the shop that last inspected it in 1965 for a value and according to them it's worth between $200-$250. He's too busy to try to find a collector for it. So I told him I'd try. $200 obo. It has no tripod but everything else including the wood case with leather strap. It's in my possession if some one would like more pictures or to come look at it.

Contact Bill Weikel at bweikel@bigsky.net.  He is a surveyor from Missoula who has a large collection of old survey equipment. See http://missoulian.com/lifestyles/territory/grid-lock-on-a-limestone-hill-southwest-of-three-forks/article_d91360c0-33a1-11df-97a0-001cc4c002e0.html and http://missoulian.com/bill-weikel-right-and-ron-milam/image_83853048-3211-11df-9e23-001cc4c03286.html .

In case you were wondering (although you probably were not), my forum name stands for "Principal Meridian Montana Pete," which seemed like an appropriate forum name for a real estate lawyer.  A typical Montana legal description is "The NW1/4 of Section 4, Township 10 North, Range 20 West, P.M.M, Ravalli County, Montana."

pete,

We should talk someday.  California railroad grants are legally described like that, but the Mexican land grants were not and many were never surveyed.  There are still holes in metes and bounds descriptions that are available for California's very short 5 year periods for prescription and adverse possession.  The largest I'm personally aware of that was adversely possessed was almost 10 acres, in the late 1990s.  Most holes are of course much smaller.

I was just teaching my kids how to read k tags, survey markers, and usgs maps this weekend.  Good stuff!

Interesting!  I don't know anything about Mexican land grants, because there aren't any Mexican land grants in Montana.  However, I do know a lot of obscure history about public road rights-of-way in Montana (county roads, city streets, and state highways) because I teach an all-day seminar on Montana public road law.

In Montana, there is an obstacle to obtaining ownership by adverse possession of unclaimed parcels of land, which is Mont. Code Ann. Section 70-19-411, which provides that somebody who is occupying a parcel or area of land can't obtain ownership of that land by adverse possession unless he or she has been paying the real estate taxes on the parcel or area for at least five years.  In most cases, no tax bills are being issued with respect to these orphaned parcels of land, which makes it difficult for anybody to acquire ownership of the parcels.

Thanks Pete, I emailed him and he has two from the 40's. He will let me know if someone else is interested. He said it was a nice piece.
