Hit the Coquille this morning with Tinker with the high hope of some salmon. Got there and it was filling like a good day(who are we kidding, any day on the water is a good day)- a lite breeze as so not to get all hot and sweaty when fighting that salmon, nice clear water and not a bad tidal swing, that special salmon fly and yes I was feeling it too-salmon strong.  Made our way down river(plan was go down far enough and drift with the tide back up) to a very fishy looking spot and started casting and casting and more casting...…. and yet still more casting! Water was shallow enough that when I looked our the side one could see the bottom and a semi yet large fish swim by (fueled by this) more casting and more casting with still more casting. Gave up on the Chart. fly and switched to blue one witch got one fish to follow(not what your thinking - more like about maybe about 10"). I know I'll go deeper, so deeper I went and wham it hit like a wet sock not much of a fight no long screaming runs or wild jumps? Fought with, well fought like a blob of grass but no I could fill head shaking or maybe body shaking some kind of shaking? Then it came from the depths a shadow at first then a shape then color-- A CRAB and no ordinary crab at that it was a male that was over the legal size. Ok I'll take it(guess I'm getting deep enough) so a while later score again with 2nd. legal crab. In the end no salmon but 5 legal crabs and before you even ask no they where not snagged, each one had the fly in its firmly clamped down claw. Who new crabs like the color blue and what is really wild about this is that Tinker was going to bring a crab trap and try his luck but in a hurry to get there this morning it got left behind. Well the timer just went off so I need to go and tend the crab to a bubbly butter bath.

What could I possibly add to this Tale of an Heroic Struggle, except this:

I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

I've caught a few legal crab on Buzzbombs out at Yaquina Bay, which certainly came as a surprise.  The crabs lock on with a claw and refuse to let go.
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."
